Hakon Adelsteen Sommerfeldt
Håkon Adelsteen Sommerfeldt (25 January 1811 – 22 January 1888) was a Norwegian naval officer and ship designer. He was born in Gausdal in Oppland, Norway. In 1826 he entered the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy (''Sjøkrigsskolen'') in Fredriksværn (now Stavern). In 1831 he became a secondary lieutenant, and in 1833 he graduated from the military college. In 1834 he became an assistant at the naval shipbuilding inspection station. Sommerfeldt became premier lieutenant in 1836. In 1837, Sommerfeldt received a travel scholarship to study shipbuilding, traveling to Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. In 1839, Sommerfeldt was appointed as naval shipbuilding inspector at the Karljohansvern naval yard in Horten. He was a co-designer of USS ''Princeton'' (1843), along with Swedish engineer and inventor John Ericsson. USS Princeton (1843)
The first USS ''Princeton'' was a screw steam warship of the United States Navy. Commanded by Captain Robert F. Stockton, ''Princeton'' was launched on September 5, 1843. On February 28, 1844, during a Potomac River pleasure cruise for dignitaries, one gun exploded, killing Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur and Secretary of the Navy Thomas Walker Gilmer, and injuring others, including a United States Senator and Captain Stockton. The disaster on board the Princeton killed more top U.S. government officials in a single day than any other tragedy in American history. President John Tyler, who was aboard but below decks, was not injured. The ship's reputation in the Navy never recovered. John Ericsson
John Ericsson (born Johan Ericsson; July 31, 1803 – March 8, 1889) was a Swedish-American inventor. He was active in England and the United States. Ericsson collaborated on the design of the railroad steam locomotive ''Novelty'', which competed in the Rainhill Trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which were won by inventor George Stephenson's (1781-1848), ''Rocket''. In North America, he designed the United States Navy's first screw-propelled steam-frigate , in partnership with Captain (later Commodore) Robert F. Stockton (1795-1866), who unjustly blamed him for a fatal accident. A new partnership with Cornelius H. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old.
