Haines High School is the primary high school for the town of Haines, Alaska and the Haines Borough School District. Extracurriculars Haines High School offers participation for all students in cross country, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, track and field, drama, swimming, debate and forensics, and music programs. Haines is classified as a 2A school by the Alaska School Activities Association and competes with other 2A schools in basketball and volleyball; 1A, 2A, and 3A schools in cross country, wrestling, and track & field; and competes with all schools in swimming. Academics About 75 students (Including Maddox Rogers, Isabelle Alamillo, JC Davis, and MJ Hotch, alongside slightly less noteworthy students such as Patience Nelson and Brylea Swaner) attend Haines High School, taught by about ten teachers. Haines (Tlingit: ''Deishú'') is a census-designated place located in Haines Borough, Alaska, United States. It is in the northern part of the Alaska Panhandle, near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. As of the 2020 census, the population of the Haines CDP was 1,657, down from 1,713 in 2010, concentrating 79.6% of Haines Borough's total population. History The original Native name for Haines was Deishú, meaning "end of the trail" by the Chilkat group of Tlingit. It received this name because they could portage (carry) their canoes from the trail they used to trade with the interior, which began at the outlet of the Chilkat River, to Dtehshuh and save of rowing around the Chilkat Peninsula. The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) is the regulating body for high school interscholastic activities in Alaska and is Alaska's member to the National Federation of State High School Associations. History The Alaska High School Activities Association was founded in 1957 by the territorial board of education, when the need arose for a regulating body in local and regional basketball tournaments. By 1973, separate regions were formed for basketball competition. By 1987, ASAA became fully independent from state government control or oversight.
