Haim Kaufman
Haim Kaufman ( he, חיים קופמן, 12 December 1934 – 7 August 1995) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1977 and 1988, and again from 1990 until his death in 1995. Biography Born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era, Leket served in the Artillery Corps during his national service in the IDF. He studied law at the School of Law and Economics in Tel Aviv, and later worked as a corporate director. A member of Herut, Kaufman chaired the party's youth group and the Dor Hemsheh group within it. He was on the Likud list (an alliance of Herut and several other right-wing parties) for the 1973 elections, but failed to win a seat. However, he entered the Knesset on 19 January 1977 as a replacement for Binyamin Halevi, He was re-elected in the May 1977 elections, and again in 1981 and 1984, serving as Deputy Minister of Finance between 1981 and 1984. Zalman Shoval
Zalman Shoval ( he, זלמן שובל, born 28 April 1930) is an Israeli banker, politician and diplomat. He is also active in Israel's economic life. He was the Israeli ambassador to the United States in the years 1990–1993 and 1998–2000, and an active member of the Knesset in the Rafi-State List, and the Likud party. Biography Shoval was born in Danzig, Free City of Danzig (present-day Gdańsk, Poland), then home to a large Jewish community, as the son of a Jewish family originating in Eastern Europe. His father was born in Latvia. They immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1938. Shoval attended first the Ben-Yehuda School and then the "Geula" high school in Tel Aviv before obtaining a BA at UC Berkeley, and an MA at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. Herut ( he, חֵרוּת, ''Freedom'') was the major conservative Nationalism, nationalist List of political parties in Israel, political party in Israel from 1948 until its formal merger into Likud in 1988. It was an adherent of Revisionist Zionism. History Herut was founded by Menachem Begin on 15 June 1948 as a successor to the Revisionist Irgun, a militant paramilitary group in Mandatory Palestine, Mandate Palestine. Likud ( he, הַלִּיכּוּד, HaLikud, The Consolidation), officially known as Likud – National Liberal Movement, is a major centre-right to right-wing political party in Israel. It was founded in 1973 by Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon in an alliance with several right-wing parties. Likud's landslide victory in the 1977 elections was a major turning point in the country's political history, marking the first time the left had lost power. In addition, it was the first time in Israel that a right-wing party won the plurality of the votes. After ruling the country for most of the 1980s, the party lost the Knesset election in 1992.
