Haim Botbol
Haim Botbol (; born 1937) is a Moroccan musician. Biography He was born to a Jewish family in Fes renowned for chaabi music. His father Jacob Abitbol was a leader of the ''malhun'' musical tradition in Fes. The family name Botbol () or Abitbol () means "father of the drum" in Darija. As a young performer, he excelled in various styles, from aita and chaabi to Gharnati and raï. He was a multi-instrumentalist, but excelled with the oud and bendir. He wrote his own lyrics and composed his own music. With his family—including his father, his brother on the violin, and his brother Claude on percussion—he formed an ensemble performing classical works and poetry. From 1950, he formed a duo with the Algerian Salim Halali, covering a number of Maghrebi classics. Chaabi (lit. "popular") refers to several types of popular music of Morocco, combining rural and urban folk music. Gharnati (Arabic: الغرناطي) refers to an Algerian variety of Andalusian classical music originating in Tlemcen. Its name is derived from the Arabic name of the city of Granada. Gharnati has also become an established tradition in other cities in western Algeria, such as Oran and Sidi-Bel-Abbès. Bendir
The ''bendir'' ( ar, بندير, plural ''banadir'', ) is a wooden-framed frame drum of North Africa and Southwest Asia. The bendir is a traditional instrument that is played throughout North Africa, as well as in Sufi ceremonies; it was played, too, in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Turkish, the word ''bendir'' means "a big hand frame drum". Construction and play The bandir often has a snare (usually made of gut) stretched across the head, which gives the tone a buzzing quality when the drum is struck with the fingers or palm. The drum is played in a vertical position. One holds the drum by looping the thumb of the non-dominant hand through a hole in the frame.
