Haiku Valley
Haikū Valley is an amphitheater-shaped valley on the windward side of the Koolau Range behind Kāneohe, Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The valley was the site of a United States Navy radio transmitting station (later taken over by the Coast Guard as an OMEGA Navigation System station) and is part of the route of Hawaii's Interstate H-3. The Haikū Stairs (also known as "Stairway to Heaven") is a foot trail of over 3,000 metal stairs ascends to ''Puu Keahiakahoe'', a peak above the east valley wall. The stairs were originally constructed as a means of reaching the radio antenna attachment points high on the surrounding ridge line. The trail starts at an elevation of and covers an approximate horizontal distance of for an average slope of about 30 degrees (however, some sections are nearly vertical). Kaneohe, Hawaii
Kāneohe () is a census-designated place (CDP) included in the City and County of Honolulu and located in Hawaii state District of Koolaupoko on the island of Oahu. In the Hawaiian language, ''kāne ohe'' means "bamboo man". According to an ancient Hawaiian story a local woman compared her husband's cruelty to the sharp edge of cutting bamboo; thus the place was named Kāneohe or "bamboo man". The population was 37,430 at the 2020 census. Kāneohe is the largest of several communities along Kāneohe Bay and one of the two largest residential communities on the windward side of Oahu (the other is Kailua). OMEGA Navigation System
OMEGA was the first global-range radio navigation system, operated by the United States in cooperation with six partner nations. It was a hyperbolic navigation system, enabling ships and aircraft to determine their position by receiving very low frequency (VLF) radio signals in the range 10 to 14 kHz, transmitted by a global network of eight fixed terrestrial radio beacons, using a navigation receiver unit. Interstate H-3
Interstate H-3 (abbreviated H-3) is an Interstate Highway located entirely within the U.S. state of Hawaii on the island of Oahu. H-3 is also known as the John A. Burns Freeway. It crosses the Ko'olau Range along several viaducts and through the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels as well as the much smaller Hospital Rock Tunnels. Despite the number, signage is that of an east–west highway. Its western terminus is at an interchange with Interstate H-1 at Halawa near Pearl Harbor. Its eastern end is at the main gate of Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH). This route satisfies the national defense purpose of connecting the Marine Corps base with the U.S. Navy port at Pearl Harbor off Interstate H-1. Ha'ikū Stairs
The Haikū Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven or Haikū Ladder, is a steep, steel step structure that provided pedestrian access to former U.S. Navy communication facilities on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The more than 3,000 steps span along Oahu's Ko'olau mountain range. The pathway has been used as a hiking trail at various times but is not open to the public. The city council voted to remove the stairs in 2021.
