Haifa City Museum
The Haifa City Museum was inaugurated in November 2000 as the historical City Museum. Its location, at the edge of Haifa’s German Colony and near the historical part of the city, affords a view of a rich and complex urban fabric that reveals the historical diversity of the city’s different populations. As part of the museum’s cultural activities, it mounts exhibitions on themes related to the city's physical and spiritual core. Historically, Haifa has been a hub of different cultures and a meeting point between East and West. Set at its heart and attentive to its different aspects, the museum opens a space for socio-political debates that emerge in the urban environment. Templers (religious Believers)
The German Templer Society emerged in Germany during the mid-nineteenth century, with its roots in the Pietist movement of the Lutheran Church, and in its history a legacy of preceding centuries during which various Christian groups undertook to establish what they saw as the perfect Christian religion in preparation for Christ's promised return. The movement was founded by Christoph Hoffmann 815-1885 who believed that humanity’s salvation lay in the gathering of God's people in a Christian community. He also believed that the second coming of Christ was imminent, and that according to Biblical prophecy it would take place in Jerusalem, where God's people were to gather as a symbol of the rebuilding of the temple. He established a number of German Templer colonies in Palestine. Hoffmann’s thinking was inspired by the 1st century Christian community and based on Matthew’s Gospel in regard to Old Testament prophecies and their relevance to the coming of Jesus Christ. German Colony, Haifa
The German Colony (''HaMoshava HaGermanit'') ( he, המושבה הגרמנית, ar, الحي الألمانية) was established in Ottoman Haifa in 1868 as a Christian German Templer Colony in Palestine. It was the first of several colonies established by the group in the Holy Land. Others were founded in Sarona near Jaffa, Galilee and Jerusalem. History The Templers, a religious Protestant sect formed in southern Germany in the 19th century, settled in Palestine at the urging of their leader, Christoph Hoffmann, in the belief that living in the Holy Land would hasten the second coming of Christ. The Templers built a colony in keeping with strict urban planning principles and introduced local industries that brought modernity to Palestine, which had long been neglected by the Ottomans.
