Hahnenklee Crags
The Hahnenklee Crags (german: Hahnenkleeklippen) are a rock formation west of Braunlage in the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany. They consist of hornfels. Walking destination The Hahnenklee Crags are a popular walking destination and can be reached from Königskrug or Braunlage. From the Hahnenklee Forest Road (''Hahnenkleer Waldstraße'') a 250 metre long path branches off to the 740 metre high viewing point. Further west the terrain drops 200 m almost vertically to the Oder river. On the opposite side, 800 metres away, the High Crags (''Hohen Klippen'') on the Rehberg (893 m) border the Oder valley. The crags are checkpoint no. 75 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network. Braunlage () is a town and health resort in the Goslar district of Lower Saxony in Germany. Situated within the Harz mountain range, south of the Brocken massif, Braunlage's main business is tourism, particularly skiing. Nearby ski resorts include the Sonnenberg and the slopes on the Wurmberg. Geography Braunlage is located on the Warme Bode, a headstream of the river Bode, close to the border with Elend in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Goslar (district)
Goslar () is a district in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Göttingen, Northeim, Hildesheim and Wolfenbüttel, the city of Salzgitter, and by the states of Saxony-Anhalt (district of Harz) and Thuringia (Nordhausen). History The history of the district is linked with the city of Goslar. The district of Goslar was established in the 19th century by the Prussian government. The city of Goslar did not belong to the district until 1972, when it was eventually incorporated into the district. Hornfels
Hornfels is the group name for a set of contact metamorphic rocks that have been baked and hardened by the heat of intrusive igneous masses and have been rendered massive, hard, splintery, and in some cases exceedingly tough and durable. These properties are due to fine grained non-aligned crystals with platy or prismatic habits, characteristic of metamorphism at high temperature but without accompanying deformation. The term is derived from the German word ''Hornfels'', meaning "hornstone", because of its exceptional toughness and texture both reminiscent of animal horns. These rocks were referred to by miners in northern England as whetstones. Most hornfels are fine-grained, and while the original rocks (such as sandstone, shale, slate and limestone) may have been more or less fissile owing to the presence of bedding or cleavage planes, this structure is effaced or rendered inoperative in the hornfels. Oder (Harz)
The Oder is a river in Lower Saxony, Germany, and a right tributary of the Rhume. Its source is in the Harz mountains, near Sankt Andreasberg. It flows southwest through Bad Lauterberg, Pöhlde and Hattorf am Harz. The Oder flows into the Rhume in Katlenburg-Lindau. Course The Oder rises in the district of Goslar in the heart of the Harz Mountains. Its source is located in the southern part of the Brockenfeld about north of the Achtermannshöhe. The river's source is called the ''Odersprung'' or "Oder Leap." Rehberg (Harz)
At above sea level, the Rehberg in the Harz mountains is the fourth highest mountain in the German state of Lower Saxony, and the fifth-highest in the Harz. Location and access It is located in the Harz National Park immediately north of Sankt Andreasberg. Its summit is a broad, flat dome, much of which is forested. It is not easily accessible because the route from the Rehberg 'ski cross' (''Rehberger Skikreuz'') was renaturalised several years ago by the Harz National Park as part of its nature conservation planning. In addition, in the region of the summit a marsh biotope has been created by artificial water damming. Harzer Wandernadel
The Harzer Wandernadel is a system of hiking awards in the Harz mountains in central Germany. The hiker (or mountain biker) can earn awards at different levels of challenge by walking to the various checkpoints in the network and stamping his or her passbook to record the visit. With 222 checkpoints in three federal states and across five districts in the Harz and with membership in five figures, the system has gained a following Germany-wide. Purpose The idea of the ''Wandernadel'' (literally "hiking needle/pin" --> "hiking badge") is to give those holidaying in the Harz a worthwhile goal to achieve and encourage them to stay for longer or return. Hahnenklee
Hahnenklee is a borough of the city of Goslar, in the German state of the Lower Saxony. It is located within the Harz mountain range between Goslar and Osterode. The population is about 1200 inhabitants. History Hahnenklee became a state-recognised climatic spa in 1882.
