Haggin Stakes
The Haggin Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. Raced in mid-June, it was open to two-year-old horses and was contested on dirt over a distance of five and one half furlongs. Inaugurated in 1940, there was no race in 1942 and 1943. After the 1982 running the event was put on hiatus until being revived in 1996. After fifty years in which it was raced, the Haggin Stakes was canceled in 2005 following a shortage of entrants. It has not been run since. The race was run in two divisions in 1940, 1941, 1944, 1963, 1964, and 1971. Thoroughbred Horse Race
Thoroughbred racing is a sport and industry involving the racing of Thoroughbred horses. It is governed by different national bodies. There are two forms of the sport – flat racing and jump racing, the latter known as National Hunt racing in the UK and steeplechasing in the US. Jump racing can be further divided into hurdling and steeplechasing. Ownership and training of racehorses Traditionally, racehorses have been owned by wealthy individuals. Olden Times
Olden Times (1958–1985) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Olden Times was conceived in France and bred in California and was raced by Rex Ellsworth, who also bred and raced U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Swaps. He was conditioned for racing by Hall of Fame trainer Mesh Tenney from a base in California. Ridden by Hank Moreno, Racing career Olden Times won top races on both dirt and grass at racetracks across the United States from 1960 through 1964 at distances from five eighths of a mile to a mile and three quarters. Telly's Pop
Telly's Pop (foaled February 25, 1973 in California) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the first horse to ever win the California Triple Crown for two-year-olds. He was purchased for $6000 by the racing partnership of Hollywood film director and producer Howard Koch and actor Telly Savalas who named the horse for his father. Breeding Bred by Ken Dodd and trainer Mel Stute, Telly's Pop was sired by Bold Combatant, a son of the outstanding Champion stallion and U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Bold Ruler. His dam was Count Us Mary whose grandsire was the 1943 U.S. Triple Crown champion, Count Fleet. Mike Harrington (horseman)
Mike Harrington (born 1964) is an American programmer and businessman. He is the co-founder of the video game company Valve. After the success of the first Valve product, ''Half-Life'' (1998), Harrington left Valve in 2000. In 2006, he co-founded the photo editing service Picnik. The Thoroughbred Corp
The Thoroughbred Corporation is a Thoroughbred horse racing and breeding operation established in 1994 by principal partner Prince Ahmed bin Salman of the Saudi Arabian royal family. It was based at an facility at Bradbury Estates, in Bradbury, California. Educated at the University of California, Irvine, Prince Ahmed and college friend Richard Mulhall teamed up to go into Thoroughbred flat racing. Initially, Mulhall served as horse trainer but eventually became manager of racing operations. The Prince invested millions of dollars and succeeded in building a quality stable that was an important part of American and European racing. Chris McCarron
Christopher John McCarron (born March 27, 1955, Boston, Massachusetts) is a retired American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey. He mounted his first horse ever at 16.5 years old and was racing professionally by 18. At only 19 years old (his first year as a jockey) Chris McCarron wove a spell that brought his mounts to the winner's circle 547 times in 1974, breaking all records for most races won in a year. Bruce Headley
Bruce Edmund Headley (14 February 1934 – 15 January 2021) was a Thoroughbred horse trainer and owner. Biography Involved with horse racing since his teens, Headley worked as an exercise rider from 1949 until taking out his trainers license in 1959. Based in California, he first gained national attention with Bertrando who won the 1991 Norfolk Stakes by a record nine lengths and went on to a second-place finish behind a brilliant performance by European star, Arazi. Headley's greatest success to date came with the Champion sprint horse Kona Gold, a winner of multiple stakes races including the 2000 Breeders' Cup Sprint.
