Haggerston Baths
Haggerston Baths in Hackney, London, was opened in 1904 as public baths. The baths were built at a cost of £60,000. There was a single pool, 91 slipper baths and a 60 stall wash house. The Grade II listed Haggerston Pool was designed by Alfred Cross. It was closed in 2000 with an uncertain future. In June 2009 after a long community campaign, a £5m grant was announced from the Department for Children, Schools and Families to refurbish and re-open the pool. The building would also contain community facilities and a GP surgery. Heavily involved in the re-opening of the pool was Michael Gallie, who was instrumental in surveying the building, creating 3D model sketches and more. Due to the 2009 financial downturn the council had to remove funding for the re-opening of the baths. The Haggerston baths campaign restarted efforts to find financial backing and public support in an effort to re-open the pool. Alfred Cross
Alfred William Stephens Cross (1858–1932) was a British architect. From 1889 to 1899 he was in partnership with Henry Spalding as Spalding and Cross, taking part in many competitions for building design. Cross and his son (Kenneth Mervyn Baskerville Cross, 1890–1968) became specialised in designs for public baths. Dulwich Baths
Dulwich Public Baths (also Dulwich Leisure Centre) is a swimming pool and gym in Dulwich, South London. It opened in 1892, and is London's oldest public baths to have remained in continuous operation. The baths are listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. Description The original sign of "Dulwich Public Baths" is on the front of the building though there has been significant, if sympathetic, redevelopment inside. There are two original entrances on the front separating men and women. The entrance is raised using steps up to the main doors to provide a high basement where a laundry was originally in operation. Camberwell Public Baths (also ''Camberwell Baths'' and recently ''Camberwell Leisure Centre'') opened in 1892 and has been in continuous operation as publicly funded community baths and more recently as a public leisure centre. Description Originally the ''Camberwell Public Baths'', the building is now known as the ''Camberwell Leisure Centre''. The facilities include a gym and swimming pool. The baths are managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Southwark Council.
