H Street Festival
The H Street Festival is a yearly street festival held in the eastern blocks of H Street in the Near Northeast neighborhood of Washington, D.C. History The H Street Festival was first organized by the Community-Business Action Coalition (COMBAC). COMBAC was created by neighborhood residents and businesses after the riots in 1968. The founders included Mr. Walter Ross, Mrs. Loree Murray, Ms. Doris Clark, Ms. Betty Hart, Mr. Idus Holmes and many others. Street Fair
A street fair celebrates the character of a neighborhood. As its name suggests, it is typically held on the main street of a neighborhood. The principal component of street fairs are booths used to sell goods (particularly food) or convey information. Some include carnival rides and parades. Many have live music and dance demonstrations. Fairs typically range no more than a few blocks long, although some fairs, such as the 9th Avenue International Food Festival in New York City and the Solano Stroll in Northern California, extend more than a mile. Loree Murray
Loree Murray (January 2, 1921 – 2009) was a community activist in Washington DC. Career Murray moved to DC in the early 1940s from Pinehurst, North Carolina. She led street patrols, known as Orange Hat patrols, to help police document drug activity. In 1985, she founded the Near Northeast Citizens Against Crimes and Drugs. DC Fashion Week
DC Fashion Week is a biennial event in the District of Columbia, United States, held by fashion designers who convene to dress local models who have auditioned for the event. Besides the preview, DCFW consists of four shows, each focusing on a different fashion grouping. In 2018, the four shows were Eco Fashions and Next Generation Designers, the Haiti Fashion Designer Showcase, the Metropolitan Emerging Designers and Indie Artists Showcase, and the 28th International Couture Collections show. Background DCFW was founded in 2003 by Ean Williams, a menswear designer for his brand Corjor International. Atlas Performing Arts Center
The Atlas Performing Arts Center is a multiple space performing arts facility located on H Street in the Near Northeast neighborhood of Washington, DC. Housed in a renovated Art Deco movie house, the facility is home to several arts organizations. History The Atlas Movie Theater was built in 1938 by the Kogod-Burka movie chain, one of four movie houses on the then-bustling commercial corridor. The riots of 1968 devastated the area and many businesses and residents abandoned H Street for the suburbs. The area became neglected with many empty buildings. The Atlas closed for good in 1976. The H Street Community Development Corporation purchased the theater in 1985, and renovated the Art Moderne facade in 1989.
