HVC (avian Brain Region)
HVC (formerly, hyperstriatum ventrale, pars caudalis (HVc), and high vocal center) is a nucleus in the brain of the songbirds (order passeriformes) necessary for both the learning and the production of bird song. It is located in the lateral caudal nidopallium and has projections to both the Bird vocalization#Neuroanatomy, direct and the anterior forebrain pathways. It is notable that both of the other orders of birds that learn song, the hummingbirds and parrots, also seem to have structures similar to HVC. Since it is believed that all three of these groups independently derived the ability to learn song, it is believed that these other HVC-like structures are examples of homoplasy. Name HVC was originally called the hyperstriatum ventrale, pars caudalis (HVc). High-velocity Cloud
High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are large collections of gas found throughout the galactic halo of the Milky Way. Their bulk motions in the local standard of rest have velocities which are measured in excess of 70–90 km s−1. These clouds of gas can be massive in size, some on the order of millions of times the mass of the Sun (\beginM_\odot\end), and cover large portions of the sky. They have been observed in the Milky Way's halo and within other nearby galaxies. HVCs are important to the understanding of galactic evolution because they account for a large amount of baryonic matter in the galactic halo. In addition, as these clouds fall into the disk of the galaxy, they add material that can form stars in addition to the dilute star forming material already present in the disk. Holographic Versatile Card
The Holographic Versatile Card (HVC) was a proposed data storage format by Optware; the projected date for a Japanese launch had been the first half of 2007, pending finalization of the specification, however as of March 2022, nothing has yet surfaced. One of its main advantages compared with discs was supposed to be the lack of moving parts when played. They claimed it would hold 30 GB of data, have a write speed 3 times faster than Blu-ray, and be approximately the size of a credit card. Optware claimed that at release the media would cost about ¥100 (roughly $1.20) each, that reader devices would initially cost about ¥200,000(roughly $2400) while reader/writer devices would have cost ¥1 000,000 (roughly $12000, as per exchange rate of Apr 2011) each.
