Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Eight (HSC-8) "Eightballers" is a United States Navy helicopter squadron based at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. HSC-8 is attached to Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) and deploys aboard . HSC-8 was redesignated from HS-8 on 28 September 2007. Mission Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Eight (HSC-8), "America's Premier Combat Helicopter Squadron", executes helicopter utility and light attack missions in support of Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN (CVW-11), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and Carrier Strike Group 9 (CSG-9) operations. Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach
Naval Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) Imperial Beach is a United States Navy facility for helicopters, situated on approximately south of San Diego and within the city limits of Imperial Beach, California. It is known as "The Helicopter Capital of the World". Mission statement The mission of NOLF Imperial Beach is to handle the overflow of helicopter squadron traffic (VFR and IFR) from NAS North Island. As a result, the helicopter squadrons at North Island perform 95% of their operations at Imperial Beach. History In 1917, the United States Army established Aviation Field on the current site of OLF Imperial Beach. The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King (company designation S-61) is an American twin-engined anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft. A landmark design, it was one of the first ASW rotorcraft to use turboshaft engines. The Sea King has its origins in efforts by the United States Navy to counter the growing threat of Soviet submarines during the 1950s. Accordingly, the helicopter was specifically developed to deliver a capable ASW platform; in particular, it combined the roles of ''hunter'' and ''killer'', which had previously been carried out by two separate helicopters. The Sikorsky H-34 "Choctaw" (company designation S-58) is an American Reciprocating engine, piston-engined military helicopter originally designed by Sikorsky Aircraft, Sikorsky as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft for the United States Navy. It has seen extended use when adapted to Turboshaft, turbine power by the British licensee as the Westland Wessex and Sikorsky as the later S-58T. H-34s served, mostly as medium transports, on every continent with the armed forces of 25 countries. It saw combat in Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and throughout Southeast Asia. Other uses included saving flood victims, recovering astronauts, fighting fires, and carrying presidents.
