HMS Woolwich (1675)
HMS ''Woolwich'' was a 54-gun fourth rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by Phineas Pett III at Woolwich Dockyard and launched in 1675. She underwent a rebuild in 1702. In 1705, when Thomas Ekines was in command, she was involved in the seizure of a Dutch ship which Ekines claimed was trading with Britains enemies of the War of the Spanish Succession. Although Ekines right to seize the ship was upheld, his further seizure of the bulk of the cargo for his personal gain caused major problems for his ongoing naval career. On 10 June 1736 she was ordered to be stripped at Deptford Dockyard, and rebuilt by Richard Stacey to the lines of a 50-gun fourth rate according to the 1733 proposals of the 1719 Establishment. Willem van de Velde the Elder (1610/11 – 13 December 1693) was a Dutch Golden Age seascape painter, who produced many precise drawings of ships and ink paintings of fleets, but later learned to use oil paints like his son. Biography Willem van de Velde, known as the Elder, a marine draughtsman and painter, was born in Leiden, the son of a Flemish skipper, Willem Willemsz. van de Velde, and is commonly said to have been bred to the sea. He married Judith Adriaens van Leeuwen in Leiden in 1631. His three known legitimate children were named Magdalena, born 1632; Willem, known as the Younger, also a marine painter, born 1633 in Leiden; and Adriaen, a landscape painter, baptized in 1636 in Amsterdam. Thomas Ekines
Thomas Ekines was an English projector and captain in the Royal Navy who combined the two roles by submitting proposals to the British government for military action in the Americas. Ekines first project was proposed to William of Orange on 16 January during England's Glorious Revolution in which William became the King of England and drew England into the Nine Years' War against France. He proposed that he be assigned the temporary command of a Dutch ship with the goal of capturing the French ship ''St. John of Rochelle'' which was lying off the Isles of Scilly with a reputed value £20,000. In the end he proceeded to capture the French vessel but was obliged to release it whilst gaining no reward and leaving him in debt. Ekines then took charge of a frigate as part of the Post Office Packet Service new station at Falmouth, carrying mail to Corunna, Spain. However he was obliged to give up the post due to illness. Chatham Dockyard
Chatham Dockyard was a Royal Navy Dockyard located on the River Medway in Kent. Established in Chatham in the mid-16th century, the dockyard subsequently expanded into neighbouring Gillingham (at its most extensive, in the early 20th century, two-thirds of the dockyard lay in Gillingham, one-third in Chatham). Richard Stacey
Richard Stacey (1663–1743) was an English shipbuilder and ship designer employed by the Royal Navy at several dockyards but predominantly Deptford. Life He was probably apprenticed as a shipwright around 1677. He was appointed a master mastmaker and boat-builder at Plymouth Dockyard by the Royal Navy in November 1695. In 1698 he transferred briefly to Kinsale where he launched HMS Kinsale at Cork Docks in Ireland. He then worked for a few months at Sheerness Dockyard in 1705 before being appointed Master Shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard in November 1705. He was personally responsible for designing the Flamborough class of ship in 1706. Deptford Dockyard
Deptford Dockyard was an important naval dockyard and base at Deptford on the River Thames, operated by the Royal Navy from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It built and maintained warships for 350 years, and many significant events and ships have been associated with it. Woolwich Dockyard (formally H.M.
