HMS London (F95)
''Regina Maria'' (F222) is a Type 22 frigate of the Romanian Naval Forces, formerly a Royal Navy ship named HMS ''London'' (F95). It is named after Queen Marie of Romania, wife of King Ferdinand I of Romania. Service HMS ''London'' was a Type 22 frigate of the Royal Navy, originally named ''Bloodhound'' but renamed ''London'' at the request of the Lord Mayor of London. She was flagship of the Royal Navy task force during the 1991 Gulf War. She was decommissioned on 14 January 1999 and sold to the Romanian Navy on 14 January 2003, being commissioned as ''Regina Maria'' on 21 April 2005. Before the sale the Sea Wolf and Exocet missile systems were removed, and the only armament the ship had when delivered was two 30 mm BMARC cannons and two three-tube anti-submarine torpedo launchers. The Romanian Navy ( ro, Forțele Navale Române) is the navy branch of the Romanian Armed Forces; it operates in the Black Sea and on the Danube. It traces its history back to 1860. The Gulf War was a 1990–1991 armed campaign waged by a Coalition of the Gulf War, 35-country military coalition in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, (born 26 March 1952) is a retired Royal Navy officer. After serving as a submarine commander, he commanded a frigate and then commanded an aircraft carrier on operational patrol off Sierra Leone. He went on to be Deputy Supreme Allied Command Transformation, Allied Commander Transformation and then Commander-in-Chief Fleet. Rear Admiral Iain Robert Henderson, (born 1 April 1948) is a retired senior Royal Navy officer. Early life and education Henderson was born on 1 April 1948. He was educated at Epsom College, then an all-boys independent school. He entered the Britannia Royal Naval College in 1965. Naval career Henderson joined the Royal Navy and trained as a helicopter and fast jet pilot, including a secondment to the RAF where he flew McDonnell Douglas Phantom interceptors out of RAF Leuchars. Sea Wolf is a naval surface-to-air missile system designed and built by BAC, later to become British Aerospace (BAe) Dynamics, and now MBDA. It is an automated point-defence weapon system designed as a short-range defence against both sea-skimming and high angle anti-ship missiles and aircraft.
