HESEG Foundation
The HESEG Foundation is a charitable foundation created by Canadians Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman in 2005Kennemer, Daniel, "New fund for lone soldiers launched", ''Jerusalem Post'', May 4, 2005 to provide scholarships to former lone soldiers (those without family in Israel) who serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Gerald W. Schwartz, OC (born 1941) is the founder, chairman and CEO of Onex Corporation. Schwartz has a net worth of US$1.5 billion, according to Forbes. Early life and career Schwartz was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated from Kelvin High School in Winnipeg. He received his B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Manitoba where he became an active brother of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Heather Maxine Reisman (born August 28, 1948) is a Canadian businesswoman and philanthropist. Reisman is the founder and chief executive of the Canadian retail chain Indigo Books and Music. She is the co-founder and past Chair of Kobo, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2019. Early life and education Reisman was born in 1948 to a Jewish family in Montreal, Quebec and educated at McGill University where she received a Bachelor of Social Work degree. In the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), a lone soldier ( he, חַיָּל בּוֹדֵד, ''Ḥayal Boded'') is defined as a serviceman or woman without immediate family in Israel. Lone soldiers serve in regular units and receive various forms of support from the IDF, Israeli government ministries and other organizations. Their exact number fluctuates over time, but is consistently in the thousands; the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported in April 2012, that there were an "estimated 5,000". Sde Dov Airport ( he, שדה דב, ''lit.''
