HAL Films was a short-lived British film production company, created in October 1997 and dissolved in 2012, although trading stopped in 2000. History The company was set up by two former managers at Channel 4, Head of Film David Aukin and Director of Film Acquisition Colin Leventhal, together with former Miramax executive Petrea "Trea" Hoving (later Leventhal), and was financed by Miramax Films. The company name was created from the three founders' last names initials: Hoving, Aukin and Leventhal. At the launch, Miramax Films co-chairman Harvey Weinstein called the managers behind HAL Films "the European dream team", and the company replaced Miramax's London production office.Variety, 1 February 2000: ''HAL, Miramax confirm split''

David Aukin
David Aukin (born 12 February 1942) is a theatrical and executive producer as well as a qualified solicitor. He has been nominated many times for British Academy Television Awards and has won twice for producing films about Tony Blair: ''The Government Inspector'' in 2005 and ''Britz'' in 2009. While Head of Film at Channel 4 he received the Michael Balcon Award from BAFTA for the quality of its output. The films he commissioned at Channel 4 gathered numerous Oscar nominations and they won for the '' Madness of King George'', '' Secrets & Lies'' and '' Trainspotting''. Miramax, LLC, also known as Miramax Films, is an American film and television production and distribution company founded on December 19, 1979, by brothers Harvey Weinstein, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, and based in Los Angeles, California. It was initially a leading producer and distributor of independent films until it became the first company to be acquired by The Walt Disney Company on June 30, 1993. Harvey Weinstein
Harvey Weinstein (; born March 19, 1952) is an American former film producer and convicted sex offender. He and his brother, Bob Weinstein, co-founded the entertainment company Miramax, which produced several successful independent films including ''Sex, Lies, and Videotape'' (1989); ''The Crying Game'' (1992); ''Pulp Fiction'' (1994); ''Heavenly Creatures'' (1994); '' Flirting with Disaster'' (1996); and ''Shakespeare in Love'' (1998).
