H3 (classification)
H3 is a para-cycling classification. The UCI recommends this be coded as MH3 or WH3. Definition Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) defines H3 as: H3.1 (ex-H2.1) * Paraplegic with impairments corresponding to a complete lesion from Th1 to Th3 * Very limited trunk stability * Impaired sympathetic nerve system * Non-spinal cord injury, but functional ability profile equivalent to sport class H3.1 (ex-H2.1) * Recumbent position in handbike mandatory (AP-bikes). Para-cycling Classification
Para-cycling classification is the process of classifying participants in para-cycling covering four functional disability types. The classification system includes classes for handcycles for people who have lower limb mobility issues. The sport is governed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Definition There are fourteen classifications based on functional disability type. The blind classifications are based on medical classification, not functional mobility classification. Union Cycliste Internationale
The ''Union Cycliste Internationale'' (UCI; ; en, International Cycling Union) is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events. The UCI is based in Aigle, Switzerland. The UCI issues racing licenses to riders and enforces disciplinary rules, such as in matters of doping. The UCI also manages the classification of races and the points ranking system in various cycling disciplines including road and track cycling, mountain biking and BMX, for both men and women, amateur and professional. Most handcycles are tricycle in form, with two coasting rear wheels and one steerable powered front wheel. Despite usually having three wheels, they are also known as ''handbikes''. 1988 Summer Paralympics
The 1988 Summer Paralympics () were the first Paralympics in 24 years to take place in the same city as the Olympic Games. They took place in Seoul, South Korea. This was the first time the term "Paralympic" was used officially. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC; german: Internationales Paralympisches Komitee) is an international non-profit organisation and the global governing body for the Paralympic Movement. The IPC organizes the Paralympic Games and functions as the international federation for nine sports. Joël Jeannot (born 23 September 1965) is a male French Olympic wheelchair racer and ''handisport'' activist. From 2007 he started competing in handbikes, winning a lot of French championships as well as several world championships in para-cycling. At the 2004 Olympic Games, he finished 7th in the demonstration sport of Men's 1,500 m wheelchair. He also participated in the 2004 Summer Paralympics, where he took gold in the 10000 metre race and silver in the 4×400 metre relay. Sandra Graf (born 9 December 1969) is a Swiss wheelchair athlete. Graf competes in wheelchair races of a variety of distances. Life Graf has twice put her career on hold to have children. In 2003 a lung embolism set back her training and kept her from competing in the marathon and 5,000-meter distances, although she still competed in the 800- and 1,500-meter races. In 2008, during her first London Marathon wheelchair race, she both won the race over American Amanda McGrory and Briton Shelly Woods and set a new course record of 1:48:04. Monica Bascio
Monica Bascio (born September 16, 1969) is an American Paralympic cross-country skier, biathlete, and handcyclist. Making her Paralympic debut at the Paralympic Winter Games Torino 2006, she has competed in a total of four Paralympic Games. At London 2012, Bascio secured two silver medals in handcycling. She was named the United States Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Sportswoman of the Year in 2013. Following her retirement after Paralympic Winter Games Sochi 2014, Bascio was diagnosed with colon cancer later that year. She went through surgery and chemotherapy treatment and has been cancer free since April 2015. In September 2016, she was elected to the International Paralympic Committee Athletes' Council, where she works to be a voice and an advocate for Paralympic athletes all over the world.
