In classical mythology, Hylas () was a youth who served as Heracles's (Roman Hercules) companion and servant. His abduction by water nymphs was a theme of ancient art, and has been an enduring subject for Western art in the classical tradition. Genealogy In Greek mythology, Hylas was the son of King Theiodamas of the Dryopians and the nymph Menodice, daughter of Orion. In some accounts, his father was Euphemus or King Ceyx of Trachis. Mythology Heracles After Heracles killed Theiodamas in battle, he took on Hylas as his arms-bearer and taught him to be a warrior. The poet Theocritus (about 300 BC) wrote about the love between Heracles and Hylas: "We are not the first mortals to see beauty in what is beautiful. No, even Amphitryon's bronze-hearted son, who defeated the savage Nemean lion, loved a boy—charming Hylas, whose hair hung down in curls. HYLAS (or HYLAS-1) is a British satellite in geostationary orbit. HYLAS, which is an acronym for ''Highly Adaptable Satellite'', is a communications satellite and was launched by the European Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guyana Space Centre at Kourou in French Guiana. It is located at the orbital location of 33.5 degrees west and will provide new and innovative services including High Definition Television (HDTV) and interactive satellite delivered broadband services. The satellite will help address the issue of poor broadband coverage in many parts of Europe which have less developed ground infrastructure. Construction HYLAS was constructed by EADS Astrium for the UK telecommunications company Avanti Communications Plc. Development of the satellite was supported by a £23m investment from the British National Space Centre (BNSC). HYLAS-4 is a telecommunications satellite owned and operated by Avanti Communications and manufactured by Orbital ATK (now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems) that was launched by an Ariane 5 rocket on 5 April 2018. Mission The satellite is built to provide high speed data transmission services to Africa, Latin America and Europe. It is based on Orbital ATK's Star-3 Bus, delivering 64 28 GHz fixed beams covering Africa and parts of Europe. There are also four independent steerable beams that can serve Africa, South America and Europe. The capacity will partially be used to allow Avanti to expand into new markets and provide growth for existing markets. Hylas Yachts is a brand of fiberglass, center-cockpit sailboats and luxury power yachts built in Taiwan by Queen Long Marine Ltd and designed by Sparkman & Stephens, German Frers, Bill Dixon and Salthouse of New Zealand. Sizes range from 42 to 70 feet. Joseph Huang, the president of Queen Long Marine, introduced the brand in 1984. History In the early 1980s, Joseph Huang of Queen Long Marine Ltd. partnered with Sparkman & Stephens to build a 47 foot sailboat called the Stevens 47. They named her after Bill Stevens of Stevens Yacht Charters because he ordered so many of the original boats. In 1984, Huang added two German Frers designs of 42 and 44 feet.
