Huw Thomas (Welsh Politician)
Huw Thomas is a Welsh Labour politician and leader of Cardiff Council since May 2017. Childhood and education Huw Thomas was born in Aberystwyth in 1985 attended local schools before studding Music at Oxford University and a Masters in International Relations at Aberystwyth University After graduating he worked in the Voluntary sector, third sector in Cardiff including for Sustrans and as Head of Christian Aid Wales. Political career Cardiff Council Executive (2012-2014) Thomas was elected to represent the Splott ward on Cardiff Council in 2012 Cardiff Council election, 2012 he was immediately appointed as Executive Member for Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure & Sport in the new Labour administration which following Labour's victory before moving to become the Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care in July 2013. Cardiff Council
Cardiff Council, formally the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff ( cy, Cyngor Sir Dinas a Sir Caerdydd) is the governing body for Cardiff, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. The principal area and its council were established in 1996 to replace the previous Cardiff City Council which had been a lower-tier authority within South Glamorgan. Cardiff Council consists of 79 councillors, representing 28 electoral wards. Labour has held a majority of the seats on the council since 2012. The 2006 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Germany 2006, was the 18th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football world championship tournament. It was held from 9 June to 9 July 2006 in Germany, which had won the right to host the event in July 2000. Teams representing 198 national football associations from all six populated continents participated in the qualification process which began in September 2003. 2017 Cardiff Council Election
The 2017 Cardiff Council Election was held on 4 May 2017 as part of the national 2017 Welsh local elections. The elections were preceded by the 2012 Cardiff Council election, 2012 elections and will be followed by the 2022 Cardiff Council election, 2022 elections. Election result Labour maintained control of the authority following these elections, gaining their highest popular vote since 1995, but ending up with a reduced number of seats. The Conservatives achieved their best result since the unitary council was created in 1995, winning twenty seats and replacing the Liberal Democrats as the official opposition on the council.
