Swimming At The 1908 Summer Olympics
At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, six swimming events were contested. These were the first Olympic Games in which a 100-metre pool had been especially constructed (inside the main stadium's track and field oval). Previous Olympic events were swum in open water (1896: The Mediterranean Sea, 1900: The Seine River, 1904: an artificial lake). Only men participated in the swimming events. The competitions were held from Monday, July 13, 1908, to Saturday, July 25, 1908. All six of the 1908 events became staples of the Olympic swimming programme, and have been contested at every edition of the Games since. The 50 m, 200 m, and 800 m freestyle events were dropped from the previous edition (though the 50 m and 200 m would later return), the relay was lengthened from 4×50 yards to 4×200 m, and the 400 m breaststroke was shortened to 200 metres. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, four rowing events were contested, all for men only. Races were held at Henley-on-Thames. The competitions were held from 28 to 31 July. Athletics At The 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's Medley Relay
The men's medley relay was run for the first time at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The event consisted of 1600 metres being run by four athletes per team. Unlike the later 4 × 400 metres relay, however, the athletes had different distances to run. In the medley, the first two runners each ran 200 metres. The third runner ran 400 and the fourth ran 800. Vilmos Rácz
Vilmos Rácz (March 31, 1889 – July 18, 1976) was a Hungarian athlete. He competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London and at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. Ödön Bodor
Ödön Bodor (né ''Ödön Krausz''; 24 January 1882, Kapuvár – 22 January 1927, Budapest) was a Hungarian athlete. He competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London and at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. He was Jewish. Career Bodor was born in Kapuvár. He was a member of the 1908 bronze medal medley relay team. Bodor ran the final 800 metres of the 1,600 metre race, following Pál Simon, Frigyes Wiesner, and József Nagy. In the first round, Bodor began his leg three yards behind the Swedish team and had to pass the other runner just to remain in competition. The time for the team in that round was 3:32.6. The final saw a reversal of fortune, however, as the American team was dominant. Bodor began with a five-yard lead over the Germans, however. He was unable to hold on to that lead, and finished inches behind the Germans at 3:32.5 to his opponents' 3:32.4 to receive a bronze rather than silver. József Nagy (athlete)
József Nagy (2 October 1881, Sárkeresztúr – 1952) was a Hungarian athlete. He competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Nagy was a member of the Hungarian medley relay team that won a bronze medal. He was the third runner on the squad, running 400 metres. He followed Pál Simon and Frigyes Wiesner and was followed by Ödön Bodor. Nagy had a six-yard lead over the Swedish team in the first round, but was unable to hold on to it. He made the transfer to Bodor while three yards behind. Bodor was able to regain the lead in the second half of the race to keep the Hungarians in the competition. Zoltán Imre Ödön Halmay de Erdőtelek (; 18 June 1881, Magasfalu – 20 May 1956, Budapest) was a Hungarian Olympic swimmer. Béla Las-Torres
B̩la Las-Torres (20 April 1890, Budapest, Kingdom of Hungary Р12 October 1915, Castelnuovo di Cattaro, in the Kingdom of Dalmatia) was a Hungarian freestyle swimmer who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics and 1912 Summer Olympics. At the 1908 Olympics he won a silver medal as a member of a Hungarian 4x200 metre freestyle relay team. He also competed in the 400 metre freestyle event, reaching the semifinals. Four years later he was fifth in the 400 metre freestyle competition, did not finish in 1500 metre freestyle final, and was a member of Hungarian freestyle relay team that won the silver medal in the 4x200 metre freestyle relay event.
