Hugh Good (rugby Union)
Hugh Maurice Good (29 September 1871 – 3 July 1941) was a New Zealand rugby union player who was a member of the New Zealand national team in 1894. His position of choice was wing three-quarter. Good did not play any test matches as New Zealand did not play their first until 1903. Early life and family Good was born in Urenui, one of nine children of Thomas Good and Sarah Gates. He received his education at Wanganui Collegiate School. A sister, Fanny, was a botanical artist, and two of his brothers, Harry (a forward) and Alan (also a wing) represented Taranaki. Alan played for New Zealand in 1893. Athletics He was also an amateur athlete and in 1898 won the national title for high jump and also shot put. He could also run the 100 metres in just over 10 seconds. Urenui
Urenui is a settlement in northern Taranaki, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 3 close to the shore of the North Taranaki Bight, 13 kilometres east of Waitara and 6 km south-west of Mimi. The Urenui River flows past the settlement into the North Taranaki Bight. Etymology The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "great courage" for , noting that courage is "a figurative expression". A fuller explanation is that the name was given by Manaia in honour of his well-endowed son. means "penis", and means "large". History The town was the site of the Urenui Redoubt, created in winter 1865 during the Second Taranaki War. 1894 Waratahs Tour Of New Zealand
The 1894 New South Wales tour of New Zealand was a rugby union tour of New Zealand undertaken by the New South Wales (NSW) representative side. During the tour NSW played matches against provincial New Zealand sides, and one against a representative New Zealand team. New South Wales won four of the matches, including the inter-colonial match against New Zealand, and lost the other eight. Summary The New South Wales team, known as "Cornstalks", played their twelve tour matches in only one month. They lost all their matches against North Island sides, but in the South Island lost only one matchagainst Canterbury. Their wins in the South Island included the only match against New Zealand, which was an 8–6 victory in Christchurch. 1893 New Zealand Rugby Union Tour Of Australia
The 1893 New Zealand tour rugby to Australia was the second tour by the New Zealand national rugby union team to Australia. Ten matches were played against regional and district sides, but no Test matches were played. It was the first tour arranged by New Zealand Rugby Football Union, which had been founded the previous year. The only previous New Zealand national team was the side that toured New South Wales in 1884.
