Hugh Clifford, 3rd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (14 April 1700- 26 March 1732) of Ugbrooke House near Chudleigh in Devon, was a peer. Origins He was the son of Hugh Clifford, 2nd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (d.1730) by his wife Anne Preston. Career He succeeded his father as baron in 1730, but survived him by only two years when he was succeeded by his eldest son. Marriage and children In 1725 he married Elizabeth Blount, a daughter of Edward Blount of Blagdon in the parish of Paignton in Devon, 3rd son of George Blount, 2nd Baronet, of Sodington Hall in the parish of Mamble in Worcestershire, by his wife Annabella Guise, a daughter of Sir John Guise, 2nd Baronet of Elmore, Gloucestershire. Standon, Hertfordshire
Standon is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. The parish includes the adjoining village of Puckeridge. The village church of St Mary has Saxon origins with much Victorian restoration. It contains the ornate tomb of the Tudor courtier Sir Ralph Sadler. The Prime Meridian passes to the west of Standon. The place-name is first attested in a Saxon charter of 944–46 AD and means "stony hill". Standon village has many local facilities. In addition to the church, there is a village hall, two public houses, a Chinese restaurant, post office, butcher, baker, and newsagent. Villagers also make frequent use of facilities in neighbouring Puckeridge, which include a pharmacy, estate agent, petrol station, public houses, doctor's surgery and primary schools (including St Thomas of Canterbury, a Roman Catholic primary school). Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, of Chudleigh in the County of Devon, is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1672 for Thomas Clifford. The title was created as "Clifford of Chudleigh" rather than simply "Clifford" to differentiate it from several other Clifford Baronies previously created for members of this ancient family, including the Barony of de Clifford (1299), which is extant but now held by a branch line of the Russell family, having inherited through several female lines. Baron Clifford of Chudleigh is the major surviving male representative of the ancient Norman family which later took the name ''de Clifford'' which arrived in England during the Norman Conquest of 1066, feudal barons of Clifford, first seated in England at Clifford Castle in Herefordshire, created Baron de Clifford by writ in 1299. Sir Charles Clifford, 1st Baronet (1 January 1813 – 27 February 1893) was a New Zealand politician. He was the first Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, serving from 1854 to 1860. Early life Clifford was born in Mount Vernon, Scotforth, Lancashire, England. Related to the Barons Clifford of Chudleigh, he came from a wealthy background, and his parents were well-connected. After attending Stonyhurst College, Clifford set out for New Zealand with his cousin William Vavasour, leaving in 1842. Arriving in the New Zealand Company settlement of Wellington, the two established a land, shipping and commissions agency with finance from their parents. They later expanded their holdings, establishing a considerable number of farming ventures. Clifford also worked in partnership with Frederick Weld, another cousin. Arthur Clifford
Arthur Clifford (1778–1830) was an English antiquarian. Life Clifford was the sixth of the eight sons of the Hon. Thomas Clifford (fourth son of Hugh Clifford, 3rd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh) of Tixall, Staffordshire, by the Hon. Barbara Aston, younger daughter and coheiress of James Aston, 5th Lord Aston of Forfar. After receiving some preliminary education, he spent some months in 1795 at Stonyhurst College. He married on 15 June 1809 Eliza Matilda, second daughter of Donald Macdonald of Berwick-upon-Tweed. His wife died in August 1827. There seems to have been no issue of the marriage. He died at Winchester on 16 January 1830, aged 52. James Aston, 5th Lord Aston of Forfar (23 May 1723 – 24 August 1751), was a son of Walter Aston, 4th Lord Aston of Forfar, and Lady Mary Howard. On 30 June 1742, James married Lady Barbara Talbot, sister of the 14th Earl of Shrewsbury, by whom he had two daughters. In 1748, he succeeded his father as Lord Aston of Forfar in the Peerage of Scotland. Lord Aston produced no direct male heir, and on his death in 1751 his title passed to his distant cousin Philip Aston, 6th Lord Aston of Forfar.
