Huai Opera
Huai opera (), also known as Jianghuai opera (), is a regional form of Chinese opera that originated in the 19th century in Yancheng, Jianhu County, and Huai'an in northeastern Jiangsu Province. In 2008 it was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage. It is most often performed in Shanghai and Jiangsu. There are three major variants with respect to mode and dialect, one from eastern Jiangsu, one from western Jiangsu, and the one in Shanghai which incorporated new tunes. Chinese Opera
Traditional Chinese opera (), or ''Xiqu'', is a form of musical theatre in China with roots going back to the early periods in China. It is an amalgamation of various art forms that existed in ancient China, and evolved gradually over more than a thousand years, reaching its mature form in the 13th century, during the Song dynasty (960–1279). Early forms of Chinese theater are simple, but over time various art forms such as music, song and dance, martial arts, acrobatics, costume and make-up art, as well as literary art forms were incorporated to form traditional Chinese opera. Performers had to practice for many years to gain an understanding of the roles. Exaggerated features and colors made it easier for the audience to identify the roles portrayed. There are over a hundred regional branches of traditional Chinese opera today. Yancheng
Yancheng () is a prefecture-level city in northeastern Jiangsu province of China, province, People's Republic of China. As the city with the largest jurisdictional area in Jiangsu, Yancheng borders Lianyungang to the north, Huai'an to the west, Yangzhou and Taizhou, Jiangsu, Taizhou to the southwest, Nantong to the south, and the Yellow Sea to the east. Jianhu County
Jianhu County () is under the administration of Yancheng, Jiangsu province, China. It borders the prefecture-level cities of Huai'an and Yangzhou to the west. Huai'an
Huai'an (), formerly called Huaiyin () until 2001, is a prefecture-level city in the central part of Jiangsu province in Eastern China. Huai'an is situated almost directly south of Lianyungang, southeast of Suqian, northwest of Yancheng, almost directly north of Yangzhou and Nanjing, and northeast of Chuzhou (Anhui). CHINOPERL
''CHINOPERL: Journal of Chinese Oral and Performing Literature'', formerly ''CHINOPERL Papers'' and ''CHINOPERL News'', is a peer-reviewed American academic journal dedicated to the study of Chinese performing arts like '' quyi'' and ''xiqu'' (Chinese opera). Intangible Cultural Heritage
An intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is a practice, representation, expression, knowledge, or skill considered by UNESCO to be part of a place's cultural heritage. Buildings, historic places, monuments, and artifacts are cultural property. Intangible heritage consists of nonphysical intellectual wealth, such as folklore, customs, beliefs, traditions, knowledge, and language. Xiao Wenyan
Xiao Wenyan (1922–2013) was a Chinese Huai opera artist. Biography Childhood Born in 1922 in Jiangsu province, Xiao moved to Shanghai with her parents when she was 4 years old. She was nicknamed “Little Bundle of Joy” as a child. Soon after she came to Shanghai she was sold to the Zhang family. She went to study in the school for 2 and one-half years. The headmaster of the school gave her the official name of Zhang Shiqing, which means someone hardworking and very cultured. Joy was sold again when she was 10 years old because her adoptive parents both passed away from illness. This time Joy was sold to Liu family which owned a theater and rickshaw company in Shanghai. The Liu's believed that Joy was a jinx which brought bad luck to people.
