Howard Griffiths (conductor)
Howard Griffiths (born 24 February 1950) is a British conductor. Griffiths was born in Hastings. He studied music at the Royal College of Music, London. He has lived in Switzerland since 1981. From 1996 to 2006, he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (Zürcher Kammerorchester, ZKO). Griffiths is a champion of music by contemporary Turkish and Swiss composers. With the ZKO, he has also conducted works in a classical and classical modern range, including CDs of Haydn's Creation, symphonies by Mozart and Ferdinand Ries and works by Beethoven, Pleyel, Cherubini and Handel. He has recorded over 60 CDs under various labels. In the UK, Griffiths was principal guest conductor of the Oxford Orchestra da Camera from 1994 to 1997. Howard Griffiths is a physiological ecologist. He is Professor of Plant Ecology in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. He formerly worked for the University of Dundee in the Department of Biological Sciences. He applies molecular biology techniques and physiology to investigate the regulation of photosynthesis and plant water-use efficiency. Research Griffiths' specializations include: * Responses to climate change, reflected by his membership of the Cambridge Centre for Climate Science (CCfCS). * Global food security, a University of Cambridge Research Theme. * Conservation and bioenergy crops, through his membership to the Cambridge Conservation Initiative. Howard Griffiths is a British television and radio presenter. His broadcast career started on board Concorde en route to New York City reporting for BBC Radio 5's ''Rave'' programme, presented by Gary Slaymaker and Rob Brydon. Howard's popularity in Wales led to appearances on numerous radio and television programmes on BBC and ITV, including fronting his own travel series for ITV Wales which ran for two 8 part series 2002 - 2003 and hosted a live phone in programme at BBC Radio Wales from 2003. Howard was a picker on ITV's ''Blind Date'' in 1993. The first and second shows attracted 16 and 17 million viewers. Howard Griffith (born November 17, 1968) is a former American football fullback who spent 11 seasons in the NFL (1991–2001). While at the University of Illinois, Griffith set the NCAA record for touchdowns in a game with eight. It occurred on September 22, 1990, against Southern Illinois University in a 56–21 Illinois win. Raised in Chicago, Griffith attended now defunct Mendel Catholic Prep High School of the Chicago Catholic League until his sophomore year. For his junior year, he transferred to Julian High School, where he was an All-City performer. Biography Griffith was drafted in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, but never played a regular-season game for the Colts.
