Howard Clewes
Howard Clewes (27 October 1912 – 29 January 1988) was an English screenwriter and novelist. He wrote for eight films between 1951 and 1974. He also wrote twenty action novels from 1938 to 1979.Renata Clewes obituary; London Independent 10 August 2009. He was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Screenplay in 1960 for ''The Day They Robbed the Bank of England''. He was born in York, England. In 1946, he married Renata Faccincani della Torre, a wartime resistance fighter. She was an active (uncredited) editor in his literary and screenwriting projects. York is a cathedral city with Roman origins, sited at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. It is the historic county town of Yorkshire. ''The Steel Bayonet'' is a 1957 British war film directed by Michael Carreras and starring Leo Genn, Kieron Moore and Michael Medwin. ''Up from the Beach'' is a 1965 French-American international co-production war film directed by Robert Parrish and starring Cliff Robertson, Red Buttons and James Robertson Justice. It was based on a 1959 novel by George Barr called ''Epitaph for an Enemy''. Plot Following the Normandy landings at Omaha Beach, an American squad frees a group of French hostages but takes several casualties in an assault in Vierville-sur-Mer. ''The One That Got Away'' is a 1957 Second World War film starring Hardy Krüger and featuring Michael Goodliffe, Jack Gwillim and Alec McCowen. The Long Memory (novel)
''The Long Memory'' is a 1951 crime novel by the British writer Howard Clewes. After seventeen years in prison for his role in a murder, Philip Davidson returns to his former haunt on the Kent side of the River Thames. He takes up residence in a derelict barge and plans his revenge against those who saw him sent to jail for a crime he did not commit. His progress is kept under observation by Bob Lowther, a police officer who married Davidson's girlfriend after he was convicted. Lowther has risen in the force since then, but has long had nagging doubts that his wife may have committed perjury. Davidson's bitterness against those who have wronged him is offset by his meeting of a young refugee woman who is equally an outsider in society.
