Howard Bison Men's Soccer
The Howard Bison men's soccer team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Howard University in Washington, D.C., United States. The team is an associate member of the Northeast Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. Howard's first men's soccer team was fielded in 1965. The team plays its home games at Greene Stadium near the Park View neighborhood of the District. The Bison are coached by Howard alumnus and former U.S. national team player, Phillip Gyau. Howard achieved much of their success in the early to mid-1970s and in the late 1980s, where they would win two NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championships (1971 and 1974), and reach the College Cup on six occasions. Phillip Gyau
Phillinoisip "Phillip" Gyau (born February 7, 1966) is a former U.S. soccer forward who is the current head coach of the Howard Bison men's soccer program. He spent his outdoor career in the American Soccer League and the American Professional Soccer League, his indoor career with the Washington Warthogs and Baltimore Blast, and spent nine years with the U.S. National Beach Soccer team. He earned six caps with the U.S. national team. In 2014, he became the head coach for Howard University's soccer team. Gyau is also the father of U.S. international Joe Gyau. Al Henderson
Al Henderson (born 24 September 1950) is a retired Trinidad soccer forward who played two seasons in the North American Soccer League. Henderson was born in Trinidad, the son of a soccer referee who taught Henderson the sport. Henderson went to England at age nine, spending three years there and continuing his athletic development. He then returned to Trinidad, attending high school at St Mary's College. While playing in Trinidad, Henderson was noticed by Howard University coach Lincoln "Tiger" Phillips, who recommended the university recruit him. Greg Simmonds
Gregory Simmonds (born 16 December 1975) is a retired Jamaican soccer player who played professionally in the USL First Division. He is currently a men's soccer athletic trainer for Virginia Commonwealth University. Simmonds attended Howard University, playing on the men's soccer team from 1995 to 1998. He graduated as the all-time leading scorer for the Bison. In 1999, Simmonds turned professional with the Hershey Wildcats of the USL A-League. He scored sixteen goals that season and was selected as the A-League Rookie of the Year. His scoring touch led to D.C. United calling him up in January 2000 for two games in the 2000 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. He came on for Jaime Moreno in a 17 January 2000 victory over L.D. Alajuelense. Shaka Hislop
Neil Shaka Hislop CM (born 22 February 1969) is a retired footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in England, he played for them at under-21 level before representing Trinidad and Tobago at senior international level. The majority of his career was spent in the top division in England where he was a part of the Newcastle United team which finished second in the Premier League for two successive seasons under Kevin Keegan's first tenure. Before this, he played for Reading where he was on the losing side in the 1st Division play-offs despite finishing second overall (the only occasion on which second place was not an automatic promotion position). Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1988–1994)
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were an American soccer team established in 1988 as part of the third American Soccer League. In 1990, it moved to the American Professional Soccer League where it spent five seasons before folding in 1994. The Strikers won the 1989 ASL championship, as well as the 1989 National Pro Soccer Championship. History In October 1987, the American Soccer League announced that it had awarded a franchise to Joe Robbie which would be located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Peter Isaacs
Peter Isaacs (born 18 August 1968) is a former Jamaican soccer forward. Youth Isaacs grew up in Kingston and attended Wolmer's School, where he was spotted by scouts from Howard University who recruited him to play at the university. He attended Howard from 1986 to 1989, playing on the men's soccer team. In 1988, Howard went to the NCAA championship game only to fall to Indiana. In 1989, Isaacs capped his collegiate career by being named a Division I First-Team All-American (soccer), first team All American and a finalist for the Hermann Trophy.
