''How Firm a Foundation'' is a science fiction novel by American writer David Weber. The fifth book in the ''Safehold'' series, it was published by Tor Books on September 13, 2011. The novel debuted at #8 on the ''New York Times'' hardcover fiction best seller list. The title of the novel comes from the hymn of the same name. Plot summary Empress Sharleyen travels to Zebediah and then Corisande to stand over the trials of those accused of treason after the conspiracies of the last novel. Her firmness, fairness and judicious exercise of mercy continue to win over the hearts and minds of the newest subjects of the Empire of Charis, especially when she is undeterred after an attempted assassination that is thwarted by Merlin. David Weber
David Mark Weber (born October 24, 1952) is an American science fiction and fantasy author. He has written several science-fiction and fantasy books series, the best known of which is the Honorverse, Honor Harrington science-fiction series. His debut novel, first novel, which he worked on with Steve White, sold in 1989 to Baen Books. Baen remains Weber's major publisher. Writing career Born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 24, 1952, Weber began writing while in elementary school, fifth grade. Some of Weber's first jobs within the writing/advertising world began after high school when he worked as copywriter, typesetter, proofreader, and paste-up artist. He later earned an undergraduate degree from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina and a Master of Arts, M.A. in history from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. "How Firm a Foundation" is a Christian hymn, published in 1787 by John Rippon in ''A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, Intended to be an Appendix to Dr. Watts's Psalms and Hymns'', known as "Rippon's Selection." How Firm a Foundation is number 128 in the 1787 first printing. It is attributed only to "K", which probably refers to Robert Keen(e), precentor at Rippon's church, though other names suggested include Richard or John Keene, Kirkham, John Keith or Words by G. Keith and Music by J. Reading as cited in the 1884 publication of Asa Hull's Jewels of Praise. It is most often sung to the tune "Foundation" (or "Protection") which first appeared in ''A Compilation of Genuine Church Music'' (1832) edited by Joseph Funk, though the original tune may be Keen(e)'s "Geard". Charles Keating (22 October 1941 – 8 August 2014) was an English actor. Background Keating was born in London to Roman Catholic parents who had emigrated from Ireland, Charles James Keating and Margaret (née Shevlin) Keating, Keating moved to the United States via Canada with his family as a teenager. He was working as a hairdresser in Buffalo, New York, when a customer suggested he try out for a local play, making his stage debut in 1959 with the Buffalo Studio Theatre. Keating found steady work with the Cleveland Play House repertory company and was on tour when he met his future wife, actress Mary Chobody. The two were married in 1964 while Keating was serving in the United States Army and directing plays for its entertainment division at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Stephen Youll (born 8 June 1965 in Hartlepool) is a British science fiction artist. He got his start in the genre when his work, done in conjunction with his twin brother Paul, was seen in 1987 at the 45th World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton, England. His first commission, a collaboration with Paul, was for the cover painting for ''Emerald Eyes'' by Daniel Keys Moran that was published by Bantam Books. The brothers continued to work together until Stephen moved to the United States. ''Safehold'' is a science fiction book series by David Weber, currently consisting of ten titles, the latest released in January 2019. The series is mostly set around the 31st century, on a distant world dubbed "Safehold" where a group of humans are in hiding from the Gbaba, an alien enemy responsible for the end of all other human civilization. The humans on Safehold avoid detection by reverting to a pre-electrical, pre-industrial technology base. This status is enforced by a religious belief system discouraging scientific curiosity and forbidding any higher technological innovation on penalty of death. The threat of the Gbaba is barely mentioned in the books so far; the main issue is the divergence of the official church from its original aims versus the outlying areas which deny the leadership of the corrupt vicars.
