Houston Alternative Art
The Houston Alternative Art chronology was originally compiled by Caroline Huber and The Art Guys for the exhibition catalogue ''No Zoning: Artists Engage Houston'', which was published by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) to accompany the group show of the same name. The exhibition was on view at CAMH from May 9-October 4, 2009. ''No Zoning: Artists Engage Houston'' was co-curated by Toby Kamps and Meredith Goldsmith and featured projects by twenty-one Houston artists using the city as inspiration, material, and site. This chronology documents Houston's alternative art scene. Before 1970 ;1930 ;Houston Artists’ Gallery Grace Spaulding John and a group of women opened the city's first artist-run gallery, the Houston Artists’ Gallery, in the basement of the Beaconsfield Hotel on Main Street. The Art Guys
The Art Guys (Michael Galbreth (born 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died 2019 in Houston, Texas) and Jack Massing (born 1959 in Buffalo, New York) are a collaborative artist team based in Houston, Texas. History The Art Guys have worked together since 1983 after meeting while students at the University of Houston. For the exploration of their ideas, they employ a wide variety of media including sculpture, drawing, performances, installations and video. Food, drugs, pencils, baseball bats, car lot flags, toothbrushes and matches are among the unconventional materials they have used. Hines College Of Architecture
The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture was founded in 1956 and is one of twelve academic colleges of the University of Houston. It offers both undergraduate and graduate level degree programs. In March 1997, Gerald D. Hines donated $7 million to the College of Architecture and the school responded by renaming the architecture school after him. The gift was the largest ever received by the architecture school and among the 10 largest gifts received by the University of Houston. SICSA Historically, The Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) is housed within the Hines College of Architecture building, it was recently moved to the Cullen college of engineering but the student and faculty spaces are still located on the third floor of the building. Menil Collection
The Menil Collection, located in Houston, Texas, refers either to a museum that houses the art collection of founders John de Menil and Dominique de Menil, or to the collection itself of approximately 17,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books. While the bulk of the collection is made up of a once-private collection, Menil Foundation, Inc. is a tax-exempt, nonprofit, public charity corporation formed under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Additionally the Menil receives public funds granted by the City of Houston, the State of Texas, and the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts.
