House Of Knesebeck
The House of Knesebeck is the name of two branches of a prominent aristocratic family in the tradition of the ancient nobility in Germany. In the 17th century they acknowledged a common ancestry and combined their arms. The ''black'' line of the family von dem Knesebeck stems from the ancient nobility of Lower Saxony, while the ''white'' line stems from the ancient nobility of the Altmark. Branches of both lines remain to this day. As one of the leading Prussian Junker families, it has produced numerous senior military and public figures. These have included ambassadors, bishops, governors, members of parliament, a field marshal, and dozens of generals. History Origin The castle of Knesebeck in Lower Saxony was jointly established by the first Duke of Brunswick and the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1236, as a defence against the Slavs. Each appointed a knight to man the fortress, who then both took their name from the castle, as was common at the time. The first documented men ...

John I, Margrave Of Brandenburg
John I, Margrave of Brandenburg ( – 4 April 1266) was from 1220 until his death Margrave of Brandenburg, jointly with his brother Otto III "the Pious". The reign of these two Ascanian Margraves was characterized by an expansion of the Margraviate, which annexed the remaining parts of Teltow and Barnim, the Uckermark, the Lordship of Stargard, the Lubusz Land and parts of the Neumark east of the Oder. They consolidated the position of Brandenburg within the Holy Roman Empire, which was reflected in the fact that in 1256, Otto III was a candidate to be elected King of the Germans. They founded several cities and developed the twin cities of Cölln and Berlin. They expanded the Ascanian castle in nearby Spandau and made it their preferred residence. Before their death, they divided the Margraviate in a ''Johannine'' and an ''Ottonian'' part. The Ascanians were traditionally buried in the Lehnin Abbey in the Ottonian part of the country. In 1258, they founded a Cistercian mon ...

House Of Bismarck
The House of Bismarck is a German noble family that rose to prominence in the 19th century, largely through the achievements of the statesman Otto von Bismarck. He was granted a hereditary comital title in 1865, the hereditary title of Prince of Bismarck in 1871, and the non-hereditary title of Duke of Lauenburg in 1890. Several of Otto von Bismarck's descendants, notably his elder son Herbert, Prince of Bismarck, were also politicians. History The family has its roots in the Altmark region, descending from Herebord von Bismarck (d. 1280), the first verifiable holder of the name, mentioned about 1270 as an official (''Schultheiß'') at the city of Stendal in the Margraviate of Brandenburg. His descent from the nearby small town of Bismark is conceivable though not ascertained. Herebord was head of the Dressmakers' Guild. During the following two generations, the family seems to have gained knightly status. Herebord's great-grandson, Nicolaus (Klaus) von Bismarck, mentioned in ...
