House Of Chikovani
The House of Chikovani ( ka, ჩიქოვანი; sometimes spelled as Chicovani) was a Georgian princely (''mtavari'') house. Dukes of Chikovani ruled a historic province, Lechkhumi in northwestern Georgia. At the end of the 17th century, General Katso Chikovani rose to prominence in Mingrelia, a western Georgian principality. After him, his son became the ruler and assumed the dynastic name of Dadiani. History The House of Chikovani first came to prominence after General Katzo Chikovani (d. 1682), Prince of Salipartiano, was promoted to the post of the Chief Minister at the court of Levan III of Mingrelia. As he strengthened his position among the nobles of western Georgia, General Chikovani eliminated members of many prominent houses, including those of the ruling Dadiani House. Simon Ivanes dze Chikovani ( ka, სიმონ ჩიქოვანი; 27 December 1902 – 24 April 1966) was a prominent Georgian poet. He set out to be the leader of the Georgian Futurist movement and ended up as a Soviet establishment figure. Early life and career Born near the town Abasha, he was educated at the Kutaisi Realschule and Tbilisi State University from which he graduated in 1922. As a teenager, he was associated with the Blue Horns, a group of young Georgian Symbolists. Although he stood far from any “proletarian” thematic, he joined the nascent "Left" poets and became their spokesman. In 1924, was arrested and nearly shot on a walking-tour to Kakheti during the Red Terror that followed the Georgian rebellion against the Soviet rule. The Society for the Spreading of Literacy among Georgians ( ka, ქართველთა შორის წერა-კითხვის გამავრცელებელი საზოგადოება, tr; also translated as the Society for the Extension of Literacy among the Georgians) was a charity founded by a group of leading Georgian intellectuals in May 1879 in order to promote a cultural renaissance among the peasantry of Georgia, then part of the Russian Empire. It survived into the early Soviet period and operated until 1926/7. Prince Ilia Chavchavadze ( ka, ილია ჭავჭავაძე; 8 November 1837 – 12 September 1907) was a Georgian public figure, journalist, publisher, writer and poet who spearheaded the revival of Georgian nationalism during the second half of the 19th century and ensured the survival of the Georgian language, literature, and culture during the last decades of Tsarist rule. He is Georgia's "most universally revered hero" and is regarded as the "Father of the Nation." He was a leader of contemporary youth intellectual movement named "Tergdaleulebi".
