Hotel Normandie (Los Angeles)
The Hotel Normandie is a historic boutique hotel within what is now Koreatown, Los Angeles. It is located at 605 S. Normandie Ave. It has 92 guest rooms and suites. It was built in 1926 in the Wilshire district in the Renaissance Revival style and was designed by Walker & Eisen, the firm of Los Angeles architects Percy A. Eisen and Albert R. Walker. Author Malcolm Lowry wrote a significant portion of the novel ''Under the Volcano'' while residing at the hotel. ''Under the Volcano'' is now listed at #11 on Modern Library's list of 100 Best Novels. Koreatown, Los Angeles
Koreatown ( ko, 코리아타운) is a neighborhood in central Los Angeles, California, centered near Eighth Street and Irolo Street. Koreans began immigrating in larger numbers in the 1960s and found housing in the Mid-Wilshire area. Many opened businesses as they found rent and tolerance toward the growing Korean population. Normandie Avenue
Normandie Avenue is one of Los Angeles County's longest north–south streets, with a stretch of about . It lies between Western Avenue to the west and Vermont Avenue to the east. The avenue begins in the south by branching off from Vermont Avenue south of Pacific Coast Highway in Harbor City. Through traffic on Normandie is directed onto Irolo Street between just north of Olympic Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard; in this section, Normandie exists as a small residential street. After crossing Franklin Avenue, Normandie resumes as a residential street before reaching its northern terminus at Ambrose Avenue in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles. Under The Volcano
''Under the Volcano'' is a novel by English writer Malcolm Lowry (1909–1957) published in 1947. The novel tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic British consul in the Mexican city of Quauhnahuac, on the Day of the Dead in November 1939. The book takes its name from the two volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, that overshadow Quauhnahuac and the characters. ''Under the Volcano'' was Lowry's second and last complete novel. The novel was adapted for radio on '' Studio One'' in 1947 but had gone out of print by the time Lowry died in 1957. Its popularity restored, in 1984 it served as the basis of a film of the same name. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked ''Under the Volcano'' at number 11 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
