Hotel Bayerischer Hof, Munich
The Bayerischer Hof on Promenadeplatz in the northwestern part of Munich is a five-star Grand Hotel. Established in 1841, it remains a destination for celebrities and guests of state in Munich. It is famous for hosting the Munich Security Conference and many celebrities. History The Bayerischer Hof opened on October 15, 1841. It was constructed by Joseph Anton von Maffei and designed by Friedrich von Gärtner. The original structure had about 100 rooms and two banquet halls. Some of its renowned guests included Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Sigmund Freud. In 1897 the Hotel was purchased for 2,850,000 Marks by Herrmann Volkhardt, who purchased additional adjoining properties and rebuilt the hotel in the Neo-Renaissance style. Münchner Klaviersommer (Munich Piano Summer) was a series of jazz concerts in Munich featuring various famous artists. Despite the name, not only pianists performed in these concerts. The concerts were usually held in July in the Philharmonic Hall Gasteig and they took place from 1981 to 1998. The sequel to the Munich Piano Summer is the ''Jazz Summer in the Bayerischer Hof'' at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Artists The concert series began in 1981 with performances by Friedrich Gulda in the America House in Munich, from which the idea of the Munich Piano Summer was based on. Gault et Millau is a French restaurant guide. It was founded by two restaurant critics, Henri Gault and Christian Millau in 1965. Points system Gault Millau rates on a scale of 1 to 20, with 20 being the highest. Restaurants given below 10 points are rarely listed. The Komödie im Bayerischen Hof is a large private theater in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Comedies, musical comedies, musicals and revues are performed in the 570-seat theater. History The cultural events in the hotel began in 1886, but due to the destruction of Munich in 1944 abruptly ended. After the reconstruction, the grandmother of the present owner of the hotel who was a celebrated singer set up a concert hall. Her son Falk Volkhardt commissioned architect Erwin Schleich with the design of today's theater which was opened in 1961 under the direction of Gerhard Metzner with the comedy "Das Glas Wasser" by Eugène Scribe.
