Horse And Rider (Ray)
''Horse and Rider'' is a 2014 sculpture by American artist Charles Ray. As of June 2015, the equestrian self-portrait was installed in the Art Institute of Chicago's South McCormick Courtyard, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The work is part of "Charles Ray: Sculpture 1997–2014". In 2019, Glenstone, a private museum located in Potomac, Maryland, began displaying ''Horse and Rider''. Glenstone also exhibits several other works by Ray. Charles Ray (born 1953) is a Los Angeles-based American sculptor. He is known for his strange and enigmatic sculptures that draw the viewer's perceptual judgments into question in jarring and unexpected ways. Christopher Knight in the ''Los Angeles Times'' wrote that Ray's "career as an artist…is easily among the most important of the last twenty years." Early life and education Charles Ray was born in Chicago as the son of Helen and Wade Ray. His parents owned and ran a commercial art school which his grandmother had founded in 1916. He was the second oldest in his family and has four brothers and a sister. The family moved to Winnetka, Illinois, in 1960. Glenstone is a private contemporary art museum in Potomac, Maryland, from downtown Washington, D.C. The museum's exhibitions are drawn from a collection of about 1,300 works from post-World War II artists around the world. It is the largest private contemporary art museum in the United States, and is noted for its setting in a broad natural landscape. ''Fountain of the Great Lakes'', or ''Spirit of the Great Lakes Fountain'', is an allegorical sculpture and fountain by Lorado Taft. The bronze artwork, created between 1907 and 1913, depicts five women arranged so that the fountains waterfall recalls the waterflow through the five Great Lakes of North America. In the Great Lakes, the waterflow begins in Lake Superior at above sea level and continues eastward through each lake until it reaches Lake Ontario. The Fountain is one of Taft's best known works. It is located in the public South McCormick Memorial Court of the Art Institute of Chicago, in the Chicago Loop. The fountain was originally installed facing south where it remained until 1963, when it was moved next to the Morton Wing addition facing west.
