Horrie Miller (rugby League)
Horrie Miller (1882-1967) was an Australian rugby league footballer in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership. He played as a with the Eastern Suburbs club in 1908 and 1909, the first years of the new code. Playing career Miller was a champion runner who was rated the fastest runner in the league's inaugural season. He headed the League's try-scoring list in that first season - he scored a hat trick of tries in that year's semi-final and followed that up with a further two in the final. He was also the League's top point scorer in season 1908. His only representative match came in that first year when he was selected to represent Sydney in a match against a touring New Zealand Maori side. Post playing The wing three-quarter also served as Eastern Suburbs secretary in the club's first season. J J Giltinan
James Joseph Giltinan (1866–1950) was an Australian entrepreneur who helped to introduce the sport of rugby league football to Australia. The J. J. Giltinan Shield, which is awarded annually to the National Rugby League minor premiers, was named after him. Arthur Conlin
Arthur Conlin (1883–1947) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s and 1910s. A New South Wales and Australian representative goal-kicking back, he played club football for the South Sydney and Western Suburbs clubs. In rugby league's first season in Australia, the 1908 NSWRFL season, Conlin captained Souths in the inaugural grand final, scoring a try to help his side to premiership victory. He was the top point-scorer for the 1909 NSWRFL season with 43 points, and that year he represented New South Wales as well. Also in 1909, Conlin's South Sydney side again won the premiership, this time in controversial circumstances as Balmain were ruled to have forfeited it. During the 1909 representative season he made two appearances at centre for Australia in the 1st and the 3rd Test against the Kiwis in Sydney. He scored a try in that 3rd Test. The 1948 NSWRFL season was the forty-first New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership season, Sydney’s top-level rugby league football competition, and Australia’s first. The teams remained unchanged from the previous season, with ten clubs from across the city contesting the premiership during the season which culminated in Western Suburbs’ victory over Balmain in the grand final. Season summary When Balmain’s young stars of 1946 and 1947 Pat Devery and Harry Bath left for big money offers in England it seemed doubtful that the Tigers would be able to continue their run of success. New South Wales Rugby League
The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) is the governing body of rugby league in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory and is a member of the Australian Rugby League Commission. It was formed in Sydney on 8 August 1907 and was known as the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) until 1984. From 1908 to 1994, the NSWRL ran Sydney's, then New South Wales', and eventually Australia's top-level rugby league club competition from their headquarters (or "Bunker" as it was nicknamed during the Super League war) on Phillip Street, Sydney.
