Quoits ( or ) is a traditional game which involves the throwing of metal, rope or rubber rings over a set distance, usually to land over or near a spike (sometimes called a hob, mott or pin). The game of quoits encompasses several distinct variations. History From coyte: ‘flat stone thrown in a game’. Probably from Old French coite - ‘flat stone’. Possible derivation of coilte - ‘cushion’. It is not until the 19th century that the game is documented in any detailed way. Miles Hoopla
Miles was the name used between 1943 and 1947 to market the aircraft of British engineer Frederick George Miles, who, with his wife – aviator and draughtswoman Maxine "Blossom" Miles (née Forbes-Robertson) – and his brother George Herbert Miles, designed numerous light civil and military aircraft and a range of curious prototypes. History Phillips and Powis A company was founded in 1928 by Charles Powis and Jack Phillips as Phillips & Powis Aircraft (Reading) Ltd. In 1929 they opened Woodley Aerodrome, near the town of Reading, Berkshire. In 1936, Rolls-Royce bought into the company. Although aircraft were produced under the Miles name, it was not until 1943 that the firm became Miles Aircraft Limited when Rolls-Royce's interests were bought out. The company needed to increase production of the Miles Messenger and to do so it took over a former linen mill in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland for the production of components of the aircraft. ''Hoop-La'' is a 1933 American pre-Code drama film directed by Frank Lloyd, and starring Clara Bow (in her final film role), Preston Foster, Richard Cromwell and Minna Gombell also in the cast. The film is based on the play ''The Barker'' by Kenyon Nicholson, which was also filmed in 1928 under the same title as the play. A version restored by the Museum of Modern Art was shown at the 2011 Classic Film Festival in Hollywood during the spring. Synopsis When the sheltered and educated Chris Miller (Richard Cromwell) who is the son of Nifty Miller (Preston Foster), manager of a travelling circus, shows up unexpectedly to visit his dad, Nifty wants him to turn around and go back to school. Malthouse Theatre is the resident theatre company of The Malthouse building in Southbank, part of the Melbourne Arts Precinct. In the 1980s it was known as the Playbox Theatre Company and was housed in the Playbox Theatre in Melbourne's CBD. ''The Hoopla'' was an Australian news and opinion website founded by Wendy Harmer and Jane Waterhouse, active from 2011 to 2015. In almost four years, ''The Hoopla'' published 5000 articles from 300 writers. History ''The Hoopla'' was launched in mid-2011 to present "news through the eyes of women" to women over 35 whose children were grown, or who had never had children. At the time, many websites targeted towards women were parenting websites. A sister website, Birdee, was aimed at younger women. Citing a lack of advertising revenue as advertisers were reluctant to spend money targeting over-50s, the website introduced a hard paywall in April 2014 making articles accessible to subscribers only. This saw subscriptions plateau and visits slump. The paywall was later softened in October 2014 and subscriptions began growing by 20% month to month to 5000 overall.
