Hong Kong Men's National Lacrosse Team
The Hong Kong men's national lacrosse team, also known as the Hong Kong men's representative lacrosse team, represents the Chinese territory of Hong Kong in international lacrosse competitions. It is organized by the Hong Kong Lacrosse Association. History Lacrosse was introduced in the then-British colony of Hong Kong in 1950 by English academic Prof. Large. Large introduced the sport to the University of Hong Kong but students only played with lacrosse sticks until 1994 when the Japanese helped the Hong Kongers play in full gear. This led to Hong Kong's admission as a member of the Federation of International Lacrosse in 2002 and debuted at the World Lacrosse Championship in the same year. At the 2017 Asia Pacific Championship in Jeju, South Korea, Hong Kong finished third behind champions Japan and runner-ups Australia. The Hong Kong Lacrosse Association is the governing body of lacrosse in Hong Kong. Founded in 1993, HKLA is a member Of World Lacrosse, Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union (APLU), as well as Sports Federation & Olympic Committee Hong Kong, China (SF&OC). The Asia Pacific Lacrosse Union (APLU) is the governing body for the sport of lacrosse in Asia and Oceania. It was founded in 2004, with four national lacrosse associations of Australia, Hong Kong , South Korea, and Japan as its founding members. Within the same year the first edition of the Asia Pacific Lacrosse Championship was held in Australia. Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. It is the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century. The game was extensively modified by European colonists, reducing the violence, to create its current collegiate and professional form. Players use the head of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. The sport has four versions that have different sticks, fields, rules and equipment: field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. World Lacrosse Championship
The World Lacrosse Championship (WLC) is the international men's field lacrosse championship organized by World Lacrosse that occurs every four years. The WLC began before any international lacrosse organization had been formed. It started as a four-team invitational tournament which coincided with Canada's centennial lacrosse celebration in 1967. Canada, the United States, Australia, and England participated. Seven years later, Australia celebrated its lacrosse centenary and another four-team invitational tournament was held between the same countries. After that tournament in 1974, the first international governing body for men's lacrosse was formed, the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF). The ILF merged with the women's governing body in 2008 to form the Federation of International Lacrosse, which changed its name to World Lacrosse in 2019. 2002 World Lacrosse Championship
The 2002 World Lacrosse Championship were held between 7–15 July 2002. The event was the ninth international men's lacrosse championship, and took place in Perth, Western Australia under the auspices of the International Lacrosse Federation. This was the second time that the tournament was held in Perth, following the 1990 tournament. Fifteen teams competed in the event in three divisions. The United States successfully defended their title for the sixth consecutive time, defeating Canada 18–15 in the final. Australia beat the Iroquois team 12–11 for third place. 2023 World Lacrosse Championship
The 2023 World Lacrosse Championship will be the 14th edition of the international men's field lacrosse tournament for national teams organized by World Lacrosse. Initially scheduled for 2022, it was postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament will be held in San Diego, California. The tournament will be limited to 30 teams for the first time through regional qualifying tournaments. Hosting The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), since renamed World Lacrosse, gave its member associations until the end of September 2016 to formally make its intent to bid known to the international sports body and March 2017 to submit their bid.
