Holmes (surname)
Holmes is an English-language surname with several origins. The name can be a variant of the surname ''Holme''. This surname has several etymological origins: it can be derived from a name for someone who lived next to a holly tree, from the Middle English ''holm''; it can also be derived from the Old English ''holm'' and Old Norse ''holmr''.. This webpage cited: . Another probable origin of Holmes is from a placename near Dundonald, or else a place located in the barony of Inchestuir. The surname is also sometimes an Anglicised form of the Gaelic ''Mac Thomáis''; similarly, ''Holmes'' can also be a variant of '' Cavish'', derived as an Anglicised form of ''Mac Thámhais''.. 5477 Holmes
5477 Holmes, provisional designation , is a Hungaria asteroid and binary system from the innermost regions of the asteroid belt, approximately in diameter. It was discovered on 27 October 1989, by American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory in California. The presumed E-type asteroid is likely spherical in shape and has a short rotation period of 2.99 hours. It was named for American amateur astronomer Robert Holmes. The discovery of its 1-kilometer-sized minor-planet moon was announced in November 2005. Orbit and classification ''Holmes'' is a core member of the Hungaria family (), a large family of bright asteroids that forms the innermost dense concentration of asteroids in the Solar System, as the Mars-crosser and near-Earth populations are much more sparse. The family is part of the larger dynamical group with the same name. It orbits the Sun in the innermost asteroid belt at a distance of 1.8–2.1  AU once every 2 years and 8 months (970 days; se ...

17P/Holmes
Comet Holmes (official designation: 17P/Holmes) is a periodic comet in the Solar System, discovered by the British amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes on November 6, 1892. Although normally a very faint object, Holmes became notable during its October 2007 return when it temporarily brightened by a factor of a million, in what was the largest known outburst by a comet, and became visible to the naked eye. It also briefly became the largest object in the Solar System, as its coma (the thin dissipating dust ball around the comet) expanded to a diameter greater than that of the Sun (although its mass remained minuscule). Discovery Comet Holmes was discovered by Edwin Holmes on November 6, 1892, while he was conducting regular observations of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). Its discovery in 1892 was possible because of an increase in its magnitude similar to the 2007 outburst; it brightened to an approximate magnitude of 4 or 5 before fading from visibility over a period of several wee ...
