Hollis (LIRR Station)
Hollis is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line (Long Island Rail Road), Main Line at the intersection of 193rd Street and Woodhull Avenue in the Hollis, Queens, Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York City. With a few exceptions, only trains on the Hempstead Branch stop here. History The station was originally built as East Jamaica in May 1885 and renamed Hollis in September of the same year. It was rebuilt as part of a grade elimination project in 1915. The station house was destroyed by arson on November 2, 1967 and a new one was built in the early 1990s. Station layout This station has two high-level wooden side platforms, each four cars long. The two middle tracks, not next to either platform, are used by through trains on the Port Jefferson Branch, Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma Branch, Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay Branch, Oyster Bay, and Montauk Branch, Montauk branches. Hollis is a residential middle class, middle-class neighborhood within the southeastern section of the New York City borough (New York City), borough of Queens. While a predominantly African-American community, there are small minorities of Hispanic and Latino Americans, Hispanics and South Asian Americans, South Asians residing in the area. Hillside Facility
The Hillside Facility, also called the Hillside Support Facility or the Hillside Maintenance Complex, is a maintenance facility of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in Jamaica, Queens, New York City. The Hillside facility was built between 1984 and 1991 on the grounds of a section of Holban Yard, a railroad freight yard. The facility covers east of the former Hillside station and can maintain 60 cars at a time. Main Line station The facility includes an employees-only station which is the first stop along the LIRR Main Line east of Jamaica station. The line is served by select trains on the Hempstead, Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay, and Port Jefferson. Like the Boland's Landing station west of Jamaica, this station is for LIRR employees only. The Montauk Branch is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch runs the length of Long Island, 115 miles (185 km) from Long Island City on the west to Montauk on the east. Ronkonkoma Branch
The Ronkonkoma Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. On LIRR maps and printed schedules, the "Ronkonkoma Branch" includes trains running along the railroad's Main Line from Hicksville (where the Port Jefferson Branch leaves the Main Line) to Ronkonkoma, and between Ronkonkoma and the Main Line's eastern terminus at Greenport. The section of the Main Line east of Ronkonkoma is not electrified and is referred to as the Greenport Branch. The western segment between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma sees 24-hour service to Penn Station in New York City. The eastern segment between Ronkonkoma and Greenport is served by diesel-electric trains, and only sees a handful of trips each day. The Port Jefferson Branch is a rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch splits from the Main Line just east of Hicksville and runs northeast and east to Port Jefferson. Several stations on the Main Line west of Hicksville are served primarily by trains bound to/from the Port Jefferson branch, so LIRR maps and schedules for the public include that part of the Main Line in the "Port Jefferson Branch" service. Hempstead Branch
The Hempstead Branch is an electrified rail line and service owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch begins at the Main Line at Queens Interlocking, just east of Queens Village station. It parallels the Main Line past Bellerose to Floral Park, where it splits southward and continues east via the village of Garden City to Hempstead Crossing.
