Hodder & Stoughton is a British publishing house, now an imprint (trade name), imprint of Hachette (publisher), Hachette. History Early history The firm has its origins in the 1840s, with Matthew Hodder's employment, aged 14, with Messrs Jackson and Walford, the official publisher for the Congregational church, Congregational Union. In 1861 the firm became Jackson, Walford and Hodder; but in 1868 Jackson and Walford retired, and Thomas Wilberforce Stoughton joined the firm, creating Hodder & Stoughton. Hodder & Stoughton published both religious and secular works, and its religious list contained some progressive titles. Ian Richard Hodder (born 23 November 1948, in Bristol) is a British archaeologist and pioneer of postprocessualist theory in archaeology that first took root among his students and in his own work between 1980–1990. River Hodder
The River Hodder is in Lancashire, England. It is a County Biological Heritage Site. It rises on White Hill and flows for approximately 23 miles to the River Ribble, of which it is the largest tributary. The Hodder drains much of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and all but the last mile of its course is through this scenic area. The upper reaches of the river feed the large Stocks Reservoir, which provides water supply to the Fylde coast. After exiting the reservoir, the Hodder continues in a general southward direction. It collects many tributaries from the valleys of Bowland and, lower down, parts of the Ribble Valley. Most notable among the feeders of the Hodder are Croasdale Brook, Easington Brook, the River Dunsop, Langden Brook and the River Loud. Jim Hodder (December 17, 1947 – June 5, 1990) was an American drummer, best known as an early member of Steely Dan. After leading the Boston-based group The Bead Game, Hodder moved to Los Angeles to join the first lineup of Steely Dan. He appeared on their first three albums before leaving the group in 1974. He worked as a session musician before his 1990 death. Biography Early years, Bead Game Hodder was born in the small Long Island hamlet of Bethpage, New York in 1947. He graduated from Plainedge High School in the Plainedge Union Free School District in 1965 and relocated thereafter to the Boston area, where he became active in the local music scene. His six-part series of 'Burton & Swinburne' steampunk novels opened with ''The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack'', which went on to win the 2010 Philip K. Dick Award. The following two novels, ''The Curious Case of the Clockwork-Man'' and ''Expedition to the Mountains of the Moon'', were released in 2011 and 2012 respectively to wide acclaim from fans of the genre, with the latter nominated for a Sidewise Award. Francis Samuel Hodder (11 February 1906 – 6 September 1943) was an Irish first-class cricketer, rugby union player and Royal Air Force officer. Hodder served in the Royal Air Force from 1925 until his death in 1943 during the Second World War. During his athletic career, he played for the Royal Air Force cricket team and rugby union for London Irish. Early life and military career The son of Samuel and Maud Hodder, he was born at Ringabella House in Carrigaline, Ireland. John Christopher Glazebrook Hodder-Williams (25 August 1926—15 May 1995) was an English musician, songwriter and author, mainly of science fiction. Ladbroke Grove Rail Crash
The Ladbroke Grove rail crash (also known as the Paddington rail crash) was a rail accident which occurred on 5 October 1999 at Ladbroke Grove in London, England, when two passenger trains collided almost head-on after one of them had passed a signal at danger. With 31 people killed and 417 injured, it remains one of the worst rail accidents in 20th-century British history. It was the second major accident on the Great Western Main Line in just over two years, the first being the Southall rail crash of September 1997, a few miles west of this accident. Both crashes would have been prevented by an operational automatic train protection (ATP) system, wider fitting of which had been rejected on cost grounds. Walter Hodder
Walter Harold Hodder (1909 – 1993) was an educator and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Burgeo and La Poile in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1962 to 1971. Hodder was born in Ireland's Eye, Trinity Bay and was educated at Bishop Feild College, at Memorial University College and at Mount Allison University. He taught school for 33 years, mainly in small communities on Newfoundland's south shore; Hodder also provided first aid and medical advice when the district nurse was not available. He was principal of elementary and high schools in Port aux Basques. He served as president of the local branches for the Newfoundland Teachers' Association and the Red Cross. Hodder served as lieutenant in the Canadian Officer Training Corps for the Canadian Army.
