Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) is the governing body of all amateur hockey ice hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador is a branch of Hockey Canada. History Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) was founded as the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association (NAHA) on December 20, 1935 in the St. John's Law offices of Robert S. Furlong on 315 Duckworth Street to govern hockey in all regions of Newfoundland. Furlong was the first President of NAHA and kept that position until 1952. Don Johnson was elected president of the NAHA in 1966 and wanted to expand minor ice hockey as one of its permanent programs. He expected that the NAHA could join the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) within five years if the terms of affiliation were acceptable, and to be admitted independent of and equal to the Maritime Amateur Hockey Association. Herder Memorial Trophy
The Herder Memorial Trophy, or Herder, is the championship trophy awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The cast silver trophy was originally donated in 1935 by the Herder family, then owners of '' The Evening Telegram'' newspaper, as a memorial to five brothers who played hockey in St. John's. The Herder was first awarded to the Corner Brook team that won the inaugural all-Newfoundland hockey championship on March 22, 1935. The most recent winners of the Herder Memorial Trophy were the Southern Shore Breakers on April 23, 2022. The Newfoundland Senior Hockey League (NSHL) was a senior ice hockey league in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada founded in 2011. The NSHL operated for three seasons from 2011–2012 to 2013–2014. The league competed for the Herder Memorial Trophy and its teams were eligible for the Allan Cup playoffs. Central/West Junior Hockey League
The Central West Junior Hockey League was an ice hockey league in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The league consists three teams that compete against each other in an 18-game season. The playoffs include two rounds, the first round is a best of five series, with the winner of each series compete for the Exploits Home Hardware Cup in a best of seven series. Until 2013, after the conclusion of the playoffs the winner competes for the Veitch Memorial Trophy against the winner in the St. John's Junior Hockey League. Winners of the Veitch Memorial Trophy earns the right to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the Don Johnson Cup. The West Coast Senior Hockey League (WCSHL) was a senior ice hockey league with teams based in Newfoundland and Labrador. The WCSHL was founded in 1996 as a senior B intermediate league and developed into a senior A league. It operated until the summer of 2011 when the WCSHL merged with the Avalon East Senior Hockey League to form the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League. The Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL) is a senior A ice hockey league in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The league competes for the Herder Memorial Trophy and its teams can declare themselves eligible for the Allan Cup. Evening Telegram Trophy
The Evening Telegram Trophy is presented to the team with the best record in the senior A hockey leagues operating in Newfoundland and Labrador. History The owners of the Evening Telegram newspaper originally donated a trophy in 1954 to be presented annually to the champions of the new senior section 'B' division of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association. The section B league was formed for teams with no 'import' or paid players on their roster. The B Division was disbanded after the 1959 Championships and the Evening Telegram Trophy was retired. The trophy was not awarded in 1960 & 1961. In 1962, the Trophy was awarded to the winner of the senior league's new Eastern Division. (The S.E.
