History Of Soccer In Newcastle, New South Wales
The sport of soccer (association football) has had a long history in the Newcastle, New South Wales and the wider Hunter Region. The area has had a number of teams involved in national competitions from 1978 through to the present day, being represented by the Newcastle Jets in the A-League. Previous National Soccer League, NSL clubs have included Newcastle KB United, Adamstown Rosebuds (as Newcastle Rosebud United) and the Newcastle Breakers. In 2000 Newcastle United were formed who survived the end of the NSL in 2004 and currently play in the A-League competition. Lee Sterrey
Lee Sterrey (born 1 May 1961) is an Australian soccer coach and former player who last coached Macarthur Rams in his home country in 2016. He has managed in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL) and Fiji. Playing career Sterrey played 87 times in the National Soccer League (NSL), turning out for Sydney Croatia in their first NSL season in 1984. In 1985, Sterrey moved to Marconi on a transfer. He played two seasons for the ''Stallions'', making 44 appearances. Sterrey returned to the NSL in 1989 playing for Blacktown City. Branko Culina
Branko Culina (; born 1 October 1957 in Zadar, Socialist Republic of Croatia, FPR Yugoslavia) is a football (soccer) coach and former player. He previously managed Sydney FC and the Newcastle Jets in the A-League. Club career Culina was born in Zadar, Socialist Republic of Croatia, FPR Yugoslavia and emigrated to Australia with his mother in 1968, at the age of 10, settling in Melbourne's Croatian community. His senior playing career began with St. Albans Saints where he captained the senior team at the age of 15. In 1974, he transferred to Essendon Croatia, he had seven successful years at the club which included winning the Victorian State Championship in 1978 and the Victorian treble (State Champions, Dockerty Cup and the State League Cup) in 1979. Nathan Tinkler
Nathan Tinkler (born 1 February 1976) is an Australian mining industry executive and was previously the principal shareholder of Aston Resources and Whitehaven Coal. He started out as a mining apprentice in the Hunter Valley, in New South Wales and set up his own business at age 26. Much of his wealth was acquired from investments in the mining industry. Biography Tinkler qualified as an electrician at the Muswellbrook TAFE and commenced his involvement in the coal industry as an apprentice electrical fitter for Bayswater Coal. At aged 26, he started his own mine machinery maintenance business called Custom Mining. In 2006, Tinkler paid a $1 million deposit to buy the Middlemount coal mine in Central Queensland.
