History Of FC Basel (1893–1918)
Fussball Club Basel 1893 has a long and illustrious history, that spans the period from 1893 to the present day. Having competed at the highest level of football in Switzerland for most of this time, FCB currently play in the Swiss Super League. The club was founded on 15 November 1893. Due to its size the history of FC Basel has been divided into five sections. This first section deals with the foundation, the early years, the forming of the Swiss Football Association (ASF-SFV), the first league championships and the years up to and during the first World War. Josy Ebinger
Josy Ebinger (26 March 1880 – 18 September 1955) was a Swiss-French businessman and founder member of FC Basel. He was long-time player in their first team and played as defender and midfielder. He was active as a club official in various offices and was club chairman from October 1902 to May 1903. He was vice president of the Swiss Football Association in 1900. As businessman he was a well-known personality in the city and held high honorary positions in his hometown. Biography Ebinger was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England had seen the new football game. He had also been member of the RTV/Realschüler-Turnverein (secondary school student gymnastics club) and had been instructed over the game by his gymnastics teacher, Adolf Glaz, at the then secondary school. AS Strasbourg
Association Sportive de Strasbourg is a French football club from the city of Strasbourg in the Alsace region of France. It was formed in 1920 by the union of FV Straßburg, a German club founded in 1890 when the city was part of the German Empire, and Strasbourger FC Donar, founded in 1899. The team has played in both French and German football leagues, as the political fortunes of the region have changed. Landhof
The Landhof was a sports stadium in the district Basel-Wettstein in Kleinbasel, Basel. It was the former and first home stadium of FC Basel. It is mentioned for the first time in a chronicle in the second half of the 18th century as a ''nice summer house with beautiful property''. The best known owner of the manor was , a member of the Merian family. He was Mayor of Basel and Landammann of Switzerland (highest office at the time). In 1892 the granddaughter of Merian-Iselin sold the Landhof to a certain Katharina Ehrler-Wittich. As the Football Club Basel 1893 was founded in 1893 and look for a ground to play, she made the Landhof available free of charge as a playing surface. Charles Volderauer
Charles (Charlie) Volderauer (30 May 1871 – 6 October 1931) was a Swiss businessman. He was founder member of the club FC Basel, played various matches for them as defender, was voted into the board of directors and was the club's president for more than three years. Football career Volderauer was one of the founders members of FC Basel on 15 November 1893. Between the years 1893 and 1899 he played at least 33 test matches as defender without scoring a goal. Most of these games were before the Swiss Serie A was founded. The first edition of the official Swiss championship season 1898–99 was played as a knock out competition, divided into three regional groups, an east (region Zürich), a central (regional north-west Switzerland) and west group (Romandy). John Tollmann
Kurt Johann 'John' Tollmann (29 June 1863 – 1924) was a Swiss businessman and owned his own company in Basel, John Tollmann & Co, a tea company and had tea plantations in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Tollmann was founder member of FC Basel. He was long-time footballer in their first team and played as goalkeeper in the 1890s. He also acted as referee and was the first secretary-treasurer of the Swiss Football Association. Football career Tollmann was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Tollmann attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. Fritz Schäublin (1 February 1867 – 1951) was the rector of the humanistic grammar school in Basel. He was founder member of FC Basel and played football with them as striker or as midfielder. With his excellent skills he served the club in various offices for many years. He was founder of their tennis department. Football career Schäublin was member of the Basel rowing club and he had visited England and there he had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Schäublin was participant of this founders meeting and he joined the team that evening. Ferdinand Isler
Ferdinand Isler (26 December 1866 – 14 December 1951) was a professor at the canton school in Frauenfeld. He was founder member of FC Basel and became the team’s first captain. He later became actuary of the club. He was a great propagandist. He wrote brochures about the football game and translated the English rules of the game into German. He was one of the first sports journalists. Football career Isler studied philosophy at the University of Zurich, graduation with certificate on 22 July 1885. He then moved to Basel, was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England he had seen the new football game. Jean Grieder (28 March 1874 – 1941) was a Swiss businessman, an asset and liability manager. He held high honorary positions in his hometown and was founder member of FC Basel. Football career Grieder was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England he had seen the new football game.
