Hired Armed Cutter Marechal De Cobourg
His Majesty's hired armed vessel ''Marechal de Cobourg'' served the British Royal Navy under contract during the French Revolutionary Wars. Contemporary records also referred to her as ''Marshall de Cobourg'', ''Marshall Cobourg'', ''Marshall Cobourg'', ''Marquis Cobourg'', ''Marquis de Cobourg'', ''Cobourg'', ''Coborg'', and ''Saxe Cobourg''. Further adding to the difficulty in tracking her through the records, is that although she was originally a cutter, later the Navy converted her to a brig. Her contract ran from 16 October 1794 to 2 November 1801. As a cutter she had a burthen of 202 tons ( bm), and carried twelve 4-pounder guns. As a brig she had a burthen of 210 tons, was armed with 16 guns, and had a crew of 60 men. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Royal Navy made use of a considerable number of hired armed vessels. These were generally smaller vessels, often cutters and luggers, that the Navy used for duties ranging from carrying and passengers to convoy escort, particularly in British coastal waters, and reconnaissance.Winfield (2008), p.387. Doctrine The Navy Board usually hired the vessel complete with master and crew rather than bareboat. Contracts were for a specified time or on an open-ended monthly hire basis. During periods of peace, such as the period between the Treaty of Amiens and the commencement of the Napoleonic Wars, the Admiralty returned the vessels to their owners, only to rehire many on the outbreak of war. ''Jalouse'' was an 18-gun ''Belliqueuse''-class brig-corvette of the French Navy, built to a design by Pierre-Alexandre-Laurent Forfait, and launched in 1794 at Honfleur. The Royal Navy captured her in May 1797 and took her into service under her existing name. In British service she served primarily on the North Sea station where she captured three small French privateers, and many Dutch merchant vessels. Henry Jamison "Jam" Handy (March 6, 1886 – November 13, 1983) was an American Olympic breaststroke swimmer, water polo player, and founder of the Jam Handy Organization (JHO), a producer of commercially sponsored motion pictures, slidefilms (later known as filmstrips), trade shows, industrial theater and multimedia training aids. Jan Willem de Winter (French: Jean Guillaume de Winter, 23 March 1761 – 2 June 1812) was a Dutch admiral during the Napoleonic Wars.
