Highbury Union F.C.
Highbury Union F.C., more usually simply known as Union, was an English association football club from Islington. History The club was founded on 14 July 1873 as a club playing both rugby football and association codes. The club continued playing both codes until at least 1877, but by 1881 was solely an association club. Although claiming a foundation date of 1873, the club's first external association rules match seems to have taken place in October 1875, against Hornsey Rovers. The club competed in the FA Cup in 1876–77, losing 5–0 at Rochester, and scratched its entry in 1877 when drawn to face the Royal Engineers. The club also took part in 1881–82 and 1882–83, but lost in the first round both times; the first time 1–0 to Hotspur after having a goal disallowed for offside, the second time 4–1 at the powerful Swifts side, the Union's goal being a consolation near the end from Poulton. Christ Church Highbury is an Anglican church in Islington, north London, next to Highbury Fields. History Architecture and construction The site was given by John Dawes, a local benefactor and landlord, and the church was built by Thomas Allom in a cruciform shape with a short chancel, transepts, and nave from 1847 to 1848. Bridget Cherry and Nikolaus Pevsner write that Christ Church Highbury 'is a successful and original use of Gothic for a building on a cruciform plan with broad octagonal crossing. The cross-plan with broad nave and crossing was popular for churches in the low church tradition where an effective auditorium for the spoken word was preferred to a plan designed for an elaborate liturgy.' The 1876–77 Football Association Challenge Cup was the sixth edition of the annual FA Cup, the oldest national football tournament in the world. Entrants increased to 37 teams, 5 more than the previous season; 8 would never contest a match. It began on 14 October 1876 and ended at the final on 24 March 1877 Wanderers successfully defended its third FA Cup in the Final on 24 March 1877 in Kennington Oval defeating Oxford University, 2–1 ( a.e.t.). 3,000 attended.
