High Hopes (Pink Floyd Song)
"High Hopes" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd, composed by guitarist David Gilmour with lyrics by Gilmour and Polly Samson. It is the closing track on their fourteenth studio album, ''The Division Bell'' (1994); it was released as the second single from the album on 17 October 1994. An accompanying music video was made for the song and was directed by Storm Thorgerson. Douglas Adams, a friend of Gilmour, chose the title for ''The Division Bell'' from one verse in this song. Live versions are featured on Pink Floyd's ''Pulse'', as well as Gilmour's '' In Concert'', ''Remember That Night'', ''Live in Gdańsk'' and ''Live at Pompeii'' releases. On '' Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd'', a somewhat shortened version of the song segues into Syd Barrett's "Bike". The segue is accomplished by cutting from the church bell at the end of "High Hopes" to a new bicycle bell sound effect before "Bike" begins. Douglas Noel Adams (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001) was an English author and screenwriter, best known for ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy''. ''The Endless River'' is the fifteenth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released in November 2014 by Parlophone Records in Europe and Columbia Records in the rest of the world. "See Emily Play" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd, released as their second single in June 1967. Written by original frontman Syd Barrett, it was released as a non-album single, but appeared as the opening track of the U.S. edition of the band's debut album ''The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'' (1967). The song was written by Barrett following the Games for May concert, and became a top 10 hit when released in the UK the following month. The group appeared three times on ''Top of the Pops'', where Barrett started showing signs of erratic behaviour, which ultimately led to him leaving the group in early 1968. "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" (also written "Hey Hey Rise Up") is a song by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on digital platforms on . It is based on a 1914 Ukrainian anthem, " Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow", and features vocals in Ukrainian by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band BoomBox. "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" is the first entirely new piece of music recorded by Pink Floyd since " Louder than Words" in 2014. The guitarist, David Gilmour, was inspired to record it in support of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion. Pink Floyd also released a music video, directed by Mat Whitecross, with images of life struggling amidst warfare. "Bike" is a song by British rock band Pink Floyd, which is the final track featured on their 1967 debut album, ''The Piper at the Gates of Dawn''. Background In the song, Syd Barrett's lyrical subject shows a girl his bike (which he borrowed); a cloak; a homeless, aging mouse that he calls Gerald; and a clan of gingerbread men, because she "fits in with isworld." With each repetition of the chorus, a sudden percussive noise is heard similar to the firing of two gunshots. The heavy reverb from these bangs immediately cuts out when the following verse begins. Towards the end of the song, he offers to take her into a "room of musical tunes". Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 – 7 July 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who co-founded the rock band Pink Floyd in 1965. Barrett was their original frontman and primary songwriter, becoming known for his whimsical style of psychedelia, English-accented singing, and stream-of-consciousness writing style. As a guitarist, he was influential for his free-form playing and for employing effects such as dissonance, distortion, echo and feedback. Originally trained as a painter, Barrett was musically active for less than ten years. ''Live at Pompeii'' is a live album and film by David Gilmour, the guitarist of Pink Floyd. It was recorded at the Amphitheatre of Pompeii. It documents his 2015–16 world tour to promote his album, ''Rattle That Lock'' (2015). The concert was directed by Gavin Elder. The album was released on 29 September 2017 and is available on CD, LP, digital download, DVD, BD and deluxe box set containing the CD album and BD, plus a bonus exclusive BD of extras. ''Live in Gdańsk'' is a live album by David Gilmour. It is a part of his ''On an Island'' project which includes an album, tour, DVD, and live album. It was released on 22 September 2008. A David Gilmour Signature Series Fender Stratocaster was released at the same time. Recording It is a recording of the final show of his On an Island Tour in 2006, where he played to an audience of 50,000 at the Gdańsk Shipyard to celebrate the founding of the Solidarity trade union. The show featured the song " A Great Day for Freedom", from the Pink Floyd album ''The Division Bell'' (1994) and was the only show of the tour to feature it. It was last performed by Gilmour during his semi-acoustic shows in 2002. Gilmour played the entire ''On an Island'' album during this concert.
