High-voltage Substations In The United Kingdom
The high-voltage (400 kV and 275 kV) electricity substations in the United Kingdom are listed in the following tables. The substations provide entry points to, and exit points from, the National Grid (GB) or Northern Ireland Electricity Network. Entry points include power stations, major wind farms and inter-connectors from other countries and regions. Exit points are to lower voltage (275 kV, 132 kV, 66 kV and 33 kV) transmission and distribution substations which are also shown in the tables. History The first high-voltage substations in Britain were built as part of the National Grid in 1927–33 by the Central Electricity Board under the provisions of the Electricity (Supply) Act 1926. National Grid (Great Britain)
In the electricity sector in the United Kingdom, the National Grid is the high-voltage electric power transmission network serving Great Britain, connecting power stations and major substations and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere on it can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere. The network covers the great majority of Great Britain and several of the surrounding islands. It does not cover Northern Ireland, which is part of a single electricity market with the Republic of Ireland. The GB grid is connected as a wide area synchronous grid nominally running at 50 hertz. There are also undersea interconnections to other grids in the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. Connah's Quay Power Station
Connah's Quay Power Station is a 1,420 MW gas-fired power station to the west of Connah's Quay in Flintshire in North Wales. It is next to the A548, being tightly situated between the road and the south bank of the River Dee. History The current station is the successor to the first station in the area, a coal-fired power station, located less than a kilometre to the southwest of the current station. The old station was opened on the 16 September 1954 by Lord Citrine, the chairman of the British Electricity Authority. The station was originally planned to only be of 60 megawatts (MW), but it was realised that a larger station would be needed. Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant (also known as VPI Immingham) is a combined heat and power, gas-fired power plant adjacent to the Humber Oil Refinery near to South Killingholme North Lincolnshire, England. Killingholme B Power Station is a Combined‐cycle gas turbine natural gas power station in the civil parish of North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire, north of the Lindsey Oil Refinery, and adjacent to Killingholme A power station Killingholme B (900 MW) opened in 1993 and is owned by Uniper (Formerly E.ON UK). Specification The Uniper (Formerly E.ON UK) plant consists of two 450 MW Siemens V94.2 gas turbine modules each connected to a heat recovery steam generator using only a single steam turbine in a 2 into 1 configuration. South Humber Bank Power Station is a 1,365 MW gas-fired power station on ''South Marsh Road'' at Stallingborough in North East Lincolnshire north of Healing and the A180 near the South Marsh Road Industrial Estate. It is around two miles east of Immingham, and employs 64 people. The site of SHBPS is around 500 metres by 400 metres in area (around 54 acres). It is next door to the Synthomer plant. It is owned by EP UK Investments Ltd., which is daughter company of EP Power Europe, which is 100% owned by Czech energy group EPH (owned by Daniel Křetínský). BritNed is a 1,000MW high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) submarine power cable between the Isle of Grain in Kent, the United Kingdom; and Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. River Medway Cable Tunnels
The River Medway Cable Tunnels are a pair of tunnels carrying high-voltage electricity transmission lines beneath the lower River Medway between the Isle of Grain and Chetney Marshes, Kent. Specification Each tunnel carries a 400 kV electricity circuit on the transmission line between the National Grid substations at Grain and Kemsley (Line Reference: 4TL). The oil-filled cables are designed to carry 3780 Amps in Winter and 3060 A in Summer. The tunnels are 1,700 metres long, 2.54 m in diameter and between 34 m and 47 m below ordnance datum. Ferrybridge Power Stations
The Ferrybridge power stations were a series of three coal-fired power stations on the River Aire near Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire, England, in operation from 1927 to 2016 on a site next to the junction of the M62 and A1(M) motorways. The first station, Ferrybridge A, was constructed in the mid-1920s and closed in 1976. Ferrybridge B was brought into operation in the 1950s and closed in the early 1990s. Elstree To St
Elstree is a large village in the Hertsmere borough of Hertfordshire, England. It is about northwest of central London on the former A5 road, that follows the course of Watling Street. In 2011, its population was 5,110. It forms part of the civil parish of Elstree and Borehamwood, originally known simply as Elstree.
