Okinawan Name
Okinawan names ( Okinawan: /, ''nā'') today have only two components, the family names (surnames or last names) first and the given names last. Okinawan family names represent the distinct historical and cultural background of the islands which now comprise Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Sekō Higa
was a Gojū Ryū karate teacher who was born in Naha. At age 13 he began to study under Higaonna Kanryō until Higaonna's death 4 years later. Higaonna had three students at the time: Juhatsu Kyoda (1887-1968), Chojun Miyagi (1888-1953), and Seko Higa (1898-1966). Kyoda went on to create his style, To'on Ryu, and Miyagi assumed the mantle of Higaonna's legacy. Higa, a policeman at the time, continued his studies with Miyagi Chōjun for 38 years until Miyagi's death. In 1931, Higa retired from the police force and opened his dojo in the Kumoji section of Naha. Only three students of Miyagi's were allowed to open a dojo while the master was still alive: Seko Higa, Jin'an Shinzato, and Jinsei Kamiya. In 1935, Higa went to the island of Saipan to teach Goju-ryu at the request of a friend. The move was not successful and Higa returned to Okinawa two years later. Byron Fija ( ''Okinawan'': 比嘉 光龍, ''Fija Bairon;'' born 1 September 1969 in Naha) is an Okinawan linguist who practices Okinawan language and activist. He is a radio and TV personality well known in his homeland Okinawa as a knowledgeable scholar, teacher and skilled practitioner of the endangered Okinawan languages. Biography Fija was born to an Okinawan mother and an American father who was likely a U.S. soldier, but was left with an uncle and aunt soon after birth. Yuchoku Higa (1910–1994) was a Japanese Shorin-ryu karate master who was awarded Hanshi (10th dan) in 1976. Biography In 1927, he began training under Jiro Shiroma who was a student of Higa's father In 1934, under Jinan Shinzato he began training te and Goju-ryu. In 1948 he began studies under Chōshin Chibana and in 1965 was awarded 9th dan by Chibana. Thomas Taro Higa (September 22, 1916 – February 11, 1985) was a wartime hero both in the United States and Okinawa. He earned a Purple Heart and Silver Star. In 2015, NHK produced the docudrama in Higa's memory. Early life Thomas Taro Higa was born on September 22, 1916 in Honolulu, Hawaii to immigrant parents Kana and Kamezo Higa. He was the third child of twelve children. During the early 1900s, many people from Okinawa and western Japan would immigrate to Hawaii in hopes of creating a lifestyle as " immigrant laborers." Their goal was to work hard and return to home with honor. Higa's parents did not have time to rear their children, so they sent the children that were born in Hawaii back to Okinawa entrusted by close relatives.
