Hestad, Sogn Og Fjordane
Hestad is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the river Gaula (between the lakes Viksdalsvatnet and Hestadfjorden—the river runs through both lakes). The village is located just north of a very small peninsula that is about wide by long. The peninsula juts south into the river, separating the two lakes. The forested peninsula is the site of Hestad Chapel and it has been a church site for centuries. There was originally an old stave church on the site that was built in the 14th century. There is a bridge from the peninsula to the south side of the river, part of the Fv.610 highway. The village is located on the north shore of the river Gaula, on the eastern end of the lake Viksdalsvatnet. A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building once common in north-western Europe. Hestad Chapel
Hestad Chapel ( no, Hestad kapell) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hestad, on a small peninsula jutting into the Hestadfjorden, a lake that is part of the river Gaula. Because of its location on a small "island"-like peninsula, the church is also known as the ("island church"). It is one of the four churches for the Gaular parish which is part of the Sunnfjord prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. Gaula (Sogn Og Fjordane)
The Gaula is a river located in the Sunnfjord region of Vestland county, Norway. The long river is the central part of the ''Gaularvassdraget'' watershed basin which covers about across the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The river is a good salmon fishing river. The river runs across the whole municipality of Gaular, and the river is the namesake of the municipality. Course The river begins as glacial runoff in the Gaularfjellet mountains and it runs through the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The glaciers that feed the river are Grovabreen, Jostefonn, and Troget, all three are located just west of the massive Jostedalsbreen glacier. The river starts up in the mountains and empties into a fjord at sea level, and so the water drops over in elevation throughout its course.
