Hersfeld-Rotenburg District
Hersfeld-Rotenburg is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the east of Hesse, Germany. Neighboring districts are Werra-Meißner, Wartburgkreis, Fulda, Vogelsbergkreis, Schwalm-Eder. History In 1821, districts were created in Hesse, including the districts Hersfeld and Rotenburg, which stayed nearly unchanged (except a short period after the revolution of 1848, when they were dissolved) through the annexion of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel) by Prussia and the creation of the Hesse state. In 1972 both districts were merged into one. Geography The district contains the hilly landscape of ''Waldhessen'', the mountains are of the ''Knüllgebirge'', ''Stölzinger Gebirge'', ''Richelsdorfer Gebirge'' and the ''Kuppenrhön'', part of the Rhön mountains. Bad Hersfeld
The festival and spa town of Bad Hersfeld (''Bad'' is "spa" in German; the Old High German name of the city was ''Herolfisfeld'') is the district seat of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in northeastern Hesse, Germany, roughly 50 km southeast of Kassel. Bad Hersfeld is known countrywide above all for the ''Bad Hersfelder Festspiele'' (festival), which have taken place each year since 1951 at the monastery ruins. These themselves are said to be Europe's biggest Romanesque church ruin. In 1967, the town hosted the seventh ''Hessentag'' state festival. Geography Location The town lies in the Hersfeld Basin formed here by the forks of the Fulda and the Haune. The inner town lies on the Fulda's left bank. Furthermore, the Geisbach and the Solz empty into the Fulda in the municipal area. Breitenbach Am Herzberg
Breitenbach am Herzberg (officially ''Breitenbach a. Herzberg'') is a municipality in southwesternmost Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hesse, Germany. Geography Location The community lies at the foot of the Hirschberg (often also known as the Herzberg) and the Rimberg in the southern Knüllgebirge (range). The constituent communities are scattered through the Jossa valley and its side valleys. The municipal area’s lowest point is to be found on the Jossa in the constituent community of Oberjossa and lies 234 m above sea level. Its highest point lies 529 m above sea level on the slopes of the Rimberg. The community lies between Alsfeld (some 18 km to the west) and Bad Hersfeld (some 20 km to the northeast). Schenklengsfeld
Schenklengsfeld is a municipality in Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hessen, Germany lying roughly 30 km northeast of Fulda and 60 km southeast of Kassel. Geography Location The community of Schenklengsfeld lies in the outliers of the Kuppenrhön (range) between the Seulingswald (range) in the north and the Hessian Skittles (a range of volcanic mountains) in the south. Some 8 km west-northwest lies Bad Hersfeld and about 17 km south-southwest Hünfeld (each as the crow flies). It is found on a fertile plateau. In the west, the land slopes down to the Fulda and in the east to the Werra valley. Near Schenklengsfeld runs part of the watershed between these two rivers. Within community limits rises the small river Solz, which in Bad Hersfeld empties into the Fulda. Furthermore, the Ransbach, which near Philippsthal empties into the Werra, also begins here. Ronshausen is a municipality and a ''Luftkurort'' (“air spa”) in Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in northeastern Hesse, Germany. Geography Location The community lies in the valley of the Ulfe, which in Bebra empties into the Fulda. It lies in the Seulingswald and the Richelsdorf Hills (ranges). Philippsthal (Werra) is a market community in Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hesse, Germany, right at the boundary with Thuringia. Geography Location Philippsthal lies between the outliers of the Rhön and the Thuringian Forest (ranges) on the river Werra. Ludwigsau
Ludwigsau is a municipality in Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in northeastern Hesse, Germany. With an area of 112 km² it is Hesse's biggest community by land area. Geography Location The community lies on the Fulda in the triangle defined by the towns of Bad Hersfeld, Bebra and Rotenburg an der Fulda. The municipal area lies on the edge of the Seulingswald (range) and stretches along the Rohrbach and Endersbach (streams) into the eastern Knüll (range).
