Herbie, the Love Bug is a Sentience, sentient 1963 Volkswagen Beetle racing car which has been featured in several Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney motion pictures starting with ''The Love Bug in'' 1968. He has a mind of his own, being capable of driving himself and often becoming a serious contender in auto racing. ''The Love Bug'' (also known as Herbie the Love Bug) is a 1968 American sports film, sports adventure film, adventure comedy film directed by Robert Stevenson (director), Robert Stevenson from a screenplay by Bill Walsh (producer), Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, based on the story "Car, Boy, Girl" by Gordon Buford. The film is the first installment in the Herbie (franchise)#Films, ''Herbie'' film series. The film follows the adventures of a sentient Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, Herbie's driver, Jim Douglas (Dean Jones (actor), Dean Jones), and Jim's love interest, Carole Bennett (Michele Lee).
